      Teaching Assistant

      Volunteered in a special needs schools whilst studying A Levels. This involved physiotherapy for children with severe disabilities which included swimming and sensory activities. It also included helping with communication and education depending on their ability. Learnt different ways to communicate depending on the child’s abilities and the ways in which the children would communicate if they were unable to speak.       Shadowed solicitors in employment law. Examined cases concerning potential wrongful dismissal and viewed bundles used in court. Assigned a research task which involved gathering information about minimum wage. Attended client meetings which discussed the evidence involved in the case and the approach the solicitor wanted to take. Attended Weightman's client publicity conference.

      Monitored the safety between the parents and children in court ordered contact sessions. Involved separating families during the hand over of children and monitoring conversations between parents and children. Learnt the procedures involved with court ordered sessions and was able to see how these sessions impacted the families and their progress through the family courts.

      • Coached students to improve their netball skills to advance into the higher levels of netball. Prepared weekly training sessions. Attended and organised weekly matches for 30 girls.       A placement in the family law sector. Examined multiple cases, composed case summaries and chronologies for bundles used in court. This was then critiqued by the head of family law where it was discussed which information was vital for the bundles. Assigned simulated cases where I was required to determine which course of action was best to take. This involved filling out paperwork and justifying my course of action to my mentor.       Criminal mini pupillage consisted of a drug conspiracy trial, witnessing a cross examination, a rape hearing and a conference examining evidence of a hit and run. This involved police witnesses and filtering through CCTV footage. Learnt the different processes involved in criminal court and the difficulties barristers are up against due to legal aid.

      Involved researching the factors which facilitate and deter women from breastfeeding whilst in employment. Included looking at whether rates differed amongst women because of social status, ethnicity or whether the workplace is still unsupportive to breastfeeding mothers. Included weekly meetings with Professor Gatrell and the production of a literature paper review.       Placement consisted of one day in family court and two days in employment tribunals. Observed family proceedings involving a contact order. Employment Tribunals gave insight into legal arguments presented in unfair dismissal claims and challenges faced in discrimination cases. Conducted research into the time limits of the claim. These experiences have aided understanding of civil proceedings and have provided a deeper insight into family law.
