Jun 2015 - nowMy name is Ana Capristo, future educator, and graduate of California State University, Northridge. I believe that effective teaching is comprised of two necessary and related elements: knowledge of the content and the ability to communicate it. Knowing the material is not enough to be effective in teaching it; likewise, communication skills alone will not result in a successful teaching experience. Thus, I take care to understand the concepts I expect to cover and to make them understandable and relatable to the students. I organize my lesson plans with the students’ learning in mind and keep my knowledge up to date. I also emphasize the importance of communication by using a variety in teaching techniques to make learning enjoyable so as to motivate the students to learn and appreciate the subject. I have a very strong commitment to teaching and to the students I’ve had in my past endeavors. My teaching style includes a student-centered approach and pedagogy that caters to the diverse student body present in the various classrooms I teach in. I draw on these differences to enrich the information of knowledge exchanged in the classroom. My teaching philosophy therefore, stems from several key objectives; I set high expectations for academic rigor and engagement. I feel that students succeed when they are presented with challenging tasks that not only promote high expectations, but that also engage students in a relatable way. Moreover, I encourage and support critical thinking from a very young age. I hope to create an environment where students exchange their ideas and interests as related to the subject, so that they can better engage with eachother and with the instructor. I always look for ways to improve and strengthen my curricular and teaching approach. I understand that being a successful student and/or educator requires lots of time and dedication. Show less
