I examined multi-choice perceptual decision-making. I studied a wide range of perceptual and motivational processes, involved in combining sensory information until a decision threshold is met. In my dissertation I looked at three models of three-alternative decision-making. My dissertation has significant implications, as it challenges previous research, but also fits into literature about decision-making strategies, thus opening doors for future research. This project consisted of designing a study, ethically conducting experiments on the daily, thoroughly analyzing and interpreting complex data and writing a report, for which I received a 2:1 mark. This has made me fully equipped in using softwares, such as PsychoPy, and analyzing data using SPSS. Show less

      Media representative

I was a media representative of BBC Knowledge Bulgaria at the Starmus festival of 2016. I researched all the topics and got first-hand information from all the speakers and delegates. I then wrote an article for BBC Knowledge Bulgaria covering the event. The article was oriented at popularizing the festival and presenting science in an attractive way for a wide variety of audiences.

    • European student parliament

      Jan 2016 - Jan 2016
      Ambassador

I was voted for by my teammates in the local student parliament in Sofia (Bulgaria) to represent team “The Human Brain” in Manchester (UK) along with other selected delegates from all over the EU. Teamwork was of essence and I greatly enjoy teambuilding activities and brainstorming new and different ideas. I met with working neuroscientists and together with them selected the most relevant political problems in the area. I then had to come up with innovative resolutions, which I presented at Manchester City Council in front of all the other teams of delegates and members of the EU Parliament. I greatly enjoy learning about the current problems in neuroscience and found it thrilling to have to debate other delegates and defend our case. Show less

I was a Cultural ambassador for the Diwali Celebration as the University of Birmingham as part of the Cultural Calendar. This improved my interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and visitors, as well as using social media to communicate, organizing events and public speaking.

      Fundraiser

I worked as a student fundraiser for the University of Birmingham. In this role, I was campaigning by contacting university alumni and supporters over the phone to share university news and receive feedback on events and publications, and to ask them to support the university with a charitable gift. The job required me to know different scientific projects and speak to a wide range of people and adapt quickly to different situations. This developed my communication skills, including listening and negotiation skills, and my ability to explain scientific concepts concisely, speak enthusiastically about various projects and tactically seek financial support. During the time that I worked on my Master's project, I got the opportunity to spend time at the Sleep and Brain Plasticity Centre at Guy's Hospital and the IoPPN. My project involved interpreting the EEG data of patients from the sleep disorders centre at Guy's Hospital, so I was trained in EEG interpretation. I learned how to interpret EEG (and supporting PSG markers) according to the AASM manual, in order to accurately score EEG data into sleep stages. My project employed an EEG scoring system, which focused on the sleep onset period, so I was additionally trained in scoring data on smaller epochs using a method specifically designed for the sleep onset period. I can therefore say that I am well adept at scoring and interpreting sleep EEG data. Show less

As part of my Master’s degree at King’s College London I completed a clinical observership at the sleep disorders centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS foundation trust. I chose to do my observership at the sleep disorder centre, because it was directly linked to my dissertation topic about sleep disorders. I got practical experience of clinical assessment and management. I got to observe how the doctors dealt with sensitive and difficult situations with clients and I also had the opportunity to discuss sleep science in depth with the doctors and learn more about the latest trends and theories in sleep science and medicine.
