Wexford spiegeltent festival
Aug 2012 - nowOwnerFrom its inaugural year in 2012, the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival has grown to be one of the biggest and most successful multi-genre festivals in Ireland. Set in the beautiful surroundings of a magnificent, original Spiegeltent, the festival has a unique and enticing atmosphere, blending the Olde Worlde feel of the Spiegeltent with the best in popular entertainment. Spiegeltents are large travelling venues, constructed in oak with a teak baroque dance floor and decorated with velvet and brocade canopies, bevelled mirror columns and stained glass windows. The circular venues feature intimate booths, an ornate bar and Art Nouveau chandeliers. Originally built in Belgium during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, only a handful of these Spiegeltents remain in existence today, and these survivors continue to travel around Europe and beyond, including to festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Arts Festival and Just for Laughs in Montreal. The Wexford Spiegeltent Festival runs for 2 weeks in October, and is located on the Quay in Wexford. The eclectic programme of events features contemporary music, comedy, theatre, film, classical music and burlesque. Acts that have performed at the Festival include Robert Plant, Gavin James, Joanne McNally, The Coronas, John Bishop, Imelda May, Sinead O'Connor, Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats, Jools Holland, Glen Hansards, Bell X1, Mick Flannery, Neil Delamere, Sharon Shannon, Christy Moore, Tommy Tiernan, Jack L, Donovan and The Prohibition Party. The Festival also features a nostalgic Carnivále, with original fairground attractions from the turn of the century including an original Carousel, Ferris Wheel, Chair-o-Planes and Swinging Boats. The Festival now yields an economic impact of €4.9m, attracting an audience of almost 22,000 annually and a marketing and PR media value of €16 million. Show less
