      Research intern

This internship introduced me to the realm of research, teaching me how to find scholarly research articles in databases, critically analyze and understand journal articles. I also collaborated with my peers to formulate research questions and design a research experiment to study the discipline of genetics in relation to the novel coronavirus. Our symposium presentation won the First Place Presentation Award, and we were invited back to present at two FIU Undergraduate Symposiums.

      Mit biogen research internship

This virtual internship introduced me to the realm of biotechnology, neurodegenerative diseases, and research. I collaborated with teammates from across the U.S to develop a research proposal and formal poster. Our research interests revolved around Parkinson's disease (PD) and possible therapeutic techniques that could be implemented in the near future, such as gene therapy. We performed scientific literature search to formulate our methodology and research design. Our teamwork resulted in a completed research poster which we presented at the end of the internship. In addition to the collaborative research project, I participated in daily lectures, lab simulations, and networking events with MIT and Biogen staff. Show less

      Summer intern

The Cerebral Cortex Camp was an intensive week-long summer program that aims to introduce participants to introductory neuroscience. This international initiative allowed me to collaborate with students from Canada, Brazil, Spain and Australia. The cultural diversity truly enhanced this experience and served as a valuable networking opportunity. Within our teams, we researched the field of neuroimaging to compose a synthesis article, design a social media post, and creatively develop an interactive game. My team won the Spirit Award for our team cohesiveness, collaboration, and presentation. Show less

Pulmonary and critical care medicine summer internship program

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine offers competitive NIH-funded summer internship programs for undergraduate students to gain invaluable research experience. The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine program selected 15 students out of over 1,000 applications, with an acceptance rate of 1%.I conducted basic science and translational research in the D 'Alessio lab under the mentorship of Dr. Noel Britton. My summer research project was called "Macrophage pro-inflammatory response is attenuated by treatment with Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor" and research on this topic is ongoing. The lab utilizes THP-1 monocytes and macrophages to elucidate the immunological mechanisms behind the effectiveness of Trikafta drug therapy in patients with cystic fibrosis. I learned procedures for cell culture research including differentiation using PMA, experimental stimulation, and flow cytometry. I presented at a Journal Club discussion and designed a poster presentation for the PCCM symposium and CARES symposium. I shadowed internal medicine residents at the Johns Hopkins Medical ICU and networked with clinicians and researchers from multiple disciplines. Show less

      Cardiac arrest taskforce

I am conducting my senior honors thesis in Dr. Maciel’s clinical research lab within the Division of Neurocritical Care. As a research assistant in the Cardiac Arrest Taskforce project, I am responsible for constructing a comprehensive cardiac arrest database based on clinical findings from the UF Shands EPIC electronic medical record. Our protocol focuses on capturing data including demographics, neurological physical exams, EEG reports, lab results, neuroimaging, and pertinent information on the nature and treatment of cardiac arrest. The main objective of this project is to identify patterns in neuroprognostication succeeding a cardiac arrest event in an attempt to improve patient health outcomes. In my thesis I will be further exploring the health outcomes of patients with cardiac arrest and movement disorder comorbidities, specifically post-hypoxic myoclonus. Show less
