      Amended Timetable Assistant

I started off my professional career as a Trainee Train Planner during which time I learnt various different roles within the planning office of this rail company. The following year I progressed to the position of Amended Timetable Assistant where I was jointly responsible for the planning of amended train schedules (diversions and bus replacements) due to engineering work which was notified to us by Network Rail. For this job it was vital that our UK geography was well known as Arriva Trains operated services from Manchester to Penzance and from Holyhead to London as well as all along the border counties and to west Wales and Gloucester, so there was vast information to work with. We had to work to strict deadlines to enable the amended information to reach the correct personnel in time to be able to advertise the changes to the train services properly. In the absence of the Amended Timetable Manager I covered the managerial position on a number of occasions. This involved attending meetings and the making of departmental decisions which I was happy to do to get the best possible service for our passengers. On a regular basis I worked with other Train Operating Companies as well as dealing with Network Rail daily to ensure passenger service schedules were correct in their databases as well as ours. • Railway Support Services

      Aug 2008 - Aug 2022
Operations Manager and Senior Recovery Engineer

I was approached in 2008 with the proposal to start a new railway supporting business of Moveright, the heavy haulage firm.I started Railway Support Services later that year which offered products, services and assistance, mainly to the heritage steam railways and private sites. Services offered included tamping work (we were able to offer for hire the only switch and crossing tamper in private ownership at the time), locomotive hire (Class 08 shunters) as well as associated maintenance packages as well as utilising my track and permanent way knowledge and materials (sourcing and selling thereof). After a year, we trialled out supplying a re-railing option; initially for heritage railways, this expanded so quick and fast with our excellent reputation that we took over several of the re-railing contracts at various TOC and FOC depots. My time volunteering on heritage railways - currently at 16 years has helped benefit this work as my ever-growing list of contacts proved invaluable whilst at the same time, the job was challenging as it initially involved selling products (tamping, track work and a re-railing service) which, as far as we were aware, filled a gap in the market at a reasonable cost for these heritage railways and this proved to be so successful, it started enveloping mainline work. • Moveright International

      Aug 2008 - Feb 2013
      Operations Manager

Although initially I was bought in by Moveright International to set-up, manage and oversee the rail branch of the business (Railway Support Services) my management skills became apparent and I also became heavily involved with the running of Moveright through the gaining of new work and the day-to-day planning and running of this heavy haulage firm, which specialised in the movement of railway rolling stock, such as coaches and locomotives – i.e. abnormal loads around the UK and occasionally overseas. It was both enjoyable and challenging at the same time. One of the biggest projects I was involved with during my time at Moveright was the repatriation of two ex-British steam locomotives back to the UK from America and Canada on behalf of the National Railway Museum in York. This was a mammoth task for the 'Mallard 75' event and the photography from the project is available in book form. Show less
