  Systemic territorial analyst

  On behalf of the French Development Agency (AFD) in the framework of the Island Workshops organized by Les Ateliers de Cergy, I intervened as a systemic expert (Engineering, Urbanism, Productive Landscapes, Living soils and Agro-ecology, Mobility, Industry) on the territory of Reunion Island to elaborate strategic and operational recommendations for the resilience of the island to climate change.Reunion Island, marked by a strong dependence (energy, economic, food) on the rest of the world (Europe and Asia), is at the same time a jewel box of wealth with a generous and sometimes tormented Nature. Cyclones, droughts, floods are the tangible materializations of climate change, which are concentrated in the hollows of the ravines of the island-volcano.These ravines, fingerprints of Reunion Island, as a common denominator and singularity in each place of the island, is the ideal support for landscape driven design to reconnect a territory concentrated on the coast, a society divided between hyper-urban, and rural ultra-dependent on sugar cane. The project we have elaborated aims at a paradigm shift that we propose to conduct along the ravine. Following a landscape design approac, we question the parcel frameworks by adopting the topography as our canevas to redefine a territorial plan from the natural ground up: Eco-systems regeneration, agricultural practices, living communities and the interfaces between urban and rural on the slopes of the island.We put forward technical and financial levers, to accompany a concrete territorial strategy of living soils, for the regeneration of ecosystem services of the island, living ally against the hazards of climate change, and lead the social renewal from a mass agriculture to a mass of farmers. By cascading effect, this approach questions and allows to consider real alternatives on the issues of communal, possession and management of spaces (especially agricultural), rural renewal and interpenetration with the urban context.
