      Director of Orchestral Studies

      As Director of Orchestral Studies, I conducted the University of Alabama's student symphony orchestra, the Huxford Symphony Orchestra, and was responsible for all aspects of managing the orchestra program. Our orchestra's membership grew to 85 musicians, the largest in its history, and included undergraduate-, masters-, and doctoral- level students primarily pursuing degrees in music, as well as some musicians studying in other disciplines outside of the School of Music. From 2013, we initiated new partnerships and programs that included:-annual fully-staged productions with the University of Alabama Opera Theatre-concerts in partnership with the Tuscaloosa City Schools for elementary-aged school children as a partner orchestra in Carnegie Hall's Link Up educational concerts-annual side-by-side concerts with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, wherein our student musicians perform alongside the musicians of the fully-professional Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra-our annual Camilla Huxford Women Composers initiative, a program where emerging women composers are invited to submit scores to an orchestral work they have written. From these submissions, we select a winner, and this composer will have her work workshopped, performed, and recorded by the Huxford Symphony Orchestra-establishment of the Huxford Symphony Guild, a community organization tasked with raising funding and awareness for the Huxford Symphony-Residencies with renowned composers including Christopher Theofanidis, Clint Needham, and John Corigliano In addition to my work with the orchestra, I also taught one section of Fundamentals of Conducting every fall, and taught advanced conducting on an individual basis to 4-6 undergraduate and graduate students each semester. I also taught graduate Symphonic Literature, as well as Introduction to Listening, UA's music appreciation course. Show less

      As a member of the conducting staff of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Alabama's largest and only full-time professional symphony orchestra, I led their youth orchestra program, which provides an intensive orchestral learning experience to high school- and college-aged musicians from around the state. From 2014-2018, our membership grew by 70%, we established new collaborations with the Greater Birmingham Music Educators' Alliance, the Musical Opportunities Program, the Indian Hills School Choir, and expanded the programs we offered to our students by instituting a concerto competition and a chamber music program.
