The primary role was the coordination of the training requirement for 2000 trainees, ensuring that Corp of Royal Engineers delivers professional and proficient tradespersons into the Service to meet Defence priorities and align to UK interests. In addition to this, I planned and executed extraordinary regimental duties across a spectrum of roles including, but not limited to; military aid to the civil authority activity; multiple construction tasks; key stakeholder engagement ranging from training providers, higher HQ, Royal representatives, and local councils. All of this was concurrent with COVID-19 risk management to projects, workforce, output, and reputation. Show less I was hand-picked from 29 (Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search) Group (approx. 1500 military personnel) to deploy as a Local Liaison Team Commander in support of Operation RESCRIPT; the military’s support to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the 3-month deployment, I translated my military skills to support Kirklees District Council, and Peterborough and Cambridge City Councils to roll out successful asymmetric testing sites. This required me to rapidly understanding the current state, baseline and then create the plan for them to execute – from cradle to grave. Show less Squadron Second in Command, 49 Field Sqn (EOD&S), 33 Engr Regiment (EOD&S), 2019 – 2020:At short notice I assumed the role of Squadron Second-in-Command, initially forecast as a 4 months cover period, it grew to a 14-month tenure. Throughout this period, I managed the careers of 100 service personnel, and regularly deputized for the Officer Commanding and acted as their Chief of Staff; coordinating and integrating all departments to ensure communication and cohesion across several domains. Additionally, I was key in mentoring 4 Troop Commanders and 2 new Operations Officers. A force multiplier, I guided and empowered them to understand their soldiers’ careers, wider operational context, and higher formation considerations. Show less I planned and coordinated all the training requirements to deploy on multi-national operations and exercises for the squadron (100 soldiers and officers). This included deploying 9 short-term training teams across a breadth of operational theatres; including Bahrain, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia. Concurrently, I configured the operational readiness and contingency planning subsets. For each deployment there would be a requirement to understand the wider mission context, the theatre threats and the expected tasks. From this educated estimate, I designed the pre-deployment training requirements and assured these were met, reporting to Army HQ. Furthermore, as part of the wider squadron output, I had to understand and forecast the readiness of the squadron in preparedness for the re-lifed concept of Light Brigade deployment. The Light Brigade is an international commitment for a rapid reaction force to deploy on medium-scale offensive and humanitarian operations. I had to re-establish these relationships with the formations (our customer) within the brigade, representing the Squadron at extensive working groups and creating the standard operating procedures to enable an effective team.Additionally, I commanded the squadron in lieu of the Officer Commanding in a month-long deployment to Canada, where we cleared approximately 100km2 of training estate from unexploded ordinance to re-establish a safe training environment. Show less Commanded, managed, and lead a 30-person strong Troop. For the duration of my 11-month Troop Command, I was deployed to the Falkland Islands, where I delivered a phase of a £7million project to erect technical and residential accommodation for an extremely austere and remote radar station. My role included resources management, the use of Microsoft Project, quality assurance and quality control, key stakeholder engagement, and change management. Not only was it a complicated build, but I maintained the mental fortitude and resilience to manage the welfare and careers of all those under my command. An incredible challenge and opportunity, it forged and engrained my understanding of people management within a team. In a physically arduous (temperatures sub -20degrees, 100+mph winds) and psychology taxing environment (8000 miles from friends and families, often extending past their end of tour dates), I learned to quickly adapt my leadership style to bring the best out of individuals. Recognised for my capacity, I was then selected from the Troop Commanders within the Squadron to step up as the Squadron Operations Officer. For the last 4 months, I project managed 3 sites totaling a cost of c. £27 million. The 3 sites were spread across several remote islands, accessed only by helicopter. My biggest challenge was resource management because the supply chain was extremely long and constricted (minimum 10-week lead time for any materials), this was owed to political sensitivities and Defence’s limited resource capacity, the result was I honed my skills to meticulously forecast, as the margin for errors was unforgiving.
