Julia Koerner explores biomimicry in 3D printing fashion garments through her interest in nature and architecture. The ‘Sporophyte Collection’ features fashion pieces which are the first of their kind, as ready-to-wear 3D printed garments in North America. Advancements in technology and research have revolutionised design possibilities in fashion. This collection explores new possibilities in flexible material 3D printing for ready-to-wear couture. The ‘Kelp Jacket’, a 3D printed garment, printed with flexible material is part of the Fall 2015 ready-to-wear ‘Sporophyte’ Collection, by designer Julia Koerner and manufactured by Stratasys Ltd.. The fashion piece debuted at “Spark - Annual Celebration of Innovation” in Minneapolis on March 10, 2015. ‘Sporophyte’ refers to a specific stage in the life cycle of a plant where spores are produced. This collection is inspired by flowerless plants which reproduce through spores. Inspired by the structure and performance of organic kelp topologies, the seaweed consists of a complex and intricate layering system. The 3-dimensional structure of the ‘Kelp Jacket’ is designed to enhance the performance flexibility of the 3D print in relation to its organic aesthetic. The lace like pattern appears as it naturally grow on the human body. The result of their cooperation is a two-part corset, reproduced on a 3-D printer with an elaborate stereolithographic technology. The corset’s design recalls the texture and feel of the smock used throughout the collection and links – not only through its straps and buckles – traditionally crafted clothing with today’s progressive, digital developments. Workshop - More Information at http://jordan.aaschool.ac.ukThe Dead Sea is a hyper-saline lake which exists at 427 metres below sea level and features a one-of-a-kind extreme ecological condition. It is the lowest point on earth and exhibits a diverse platform for research into the Ecomorphology of crystalline formations. In 2015, the AA in Jordan continues in its third-cycle to build up on research into naturally occurring phenomena in the region, and how these phenomena can inform design methodologies which re-think existing practices. The programme will focus on crystalline formations and their potential development at a variety of architectural and urban scales through the use of cutting-edge computational design technology. The programme will bring together a network of distinguished faculty and guests to offer design-research units, specialist tooling seminars and a guest-lecture series; which are based in Amman with exclusive visits to the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea. Porifera Collection - 3D printed "Venus" Dress - Personal Collection

“The research for the 2016 3D-printed Venus dress was based on analysis of the deep-sea sponge, also known as 'Venus flower basket'. The woven net-like structure grows based on environmental influences and adapts to its surroundings. It is influenced by light and water currents. The 3D-printed dress is a woven and tessellated matrix generated from a point-cloud. This is mapped based on characteristics and dimensions of the wearer. The dress also reacts to the wearer by using heat-mapping technology to highlight their emotions. Some parts of the dress are 3D printed using biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) filament, adapting to temperature and touch. In detail it also changes colour according to its environment. Photography: Tom Oldham & Sophie KirchnerModel: Alex Würfel Show less

At Jordan’s southern-most tip, the Gulf of Aqaba encapsulates a vast biodiversity of marine life including coral reefs and benthic organisms and habitats; many of which are endemic to the area. As part of our programme agenda on ‘Natural Extremities’ we continue to build-up on design-research into unique ecological phenomena in the region. In July 2016, the focus will be on distinct marine topologies and morphologies found in the Gulf of Aqaba; and their transfiguration into outcomes within architecture and design with a particular focus on computational design methods. The ten-day programme will bring together a network of distinguished international faculty and guests to offer design-research units, specialist software tutorials and a guest-lecture series; the programme will be primarily based in Amman, and will include an exclusive visit to Aqaba were participants will study and document various marine habitats via snorkeling, photography and 3D-scanning. The Wadi Rum Desert, located at the southern edge of Jordan encapsulates the utmost outstanding resemblance of an ecology on Earth to Planet Mars.Throughout the design-research workshop, participants will investigate design concepts for potential interventions within the Martian landscape, speculating on design that derives from research into the natural ecology of Mars; further aided by a research visit to Wadi Rum – to serve as a proving ground. The programme will focus on utilizing algorithmic and computational design methods, unveiling novel potentials in design at an array of different scales from the material, architectural to the urban. The ten-day programme will bring together a network of distinguished international faculty and guests to offer design-research units, specialist software tutorials and a guest-lecture series; the programme will be primarily based in Amman, and will include an exclusive visit to the UNESCO protected world-heritage site of the Wadi Rum desert. The project Julia Koerner is proposing for Re-Fream is focused on the 2D to 3D relationship in 3D-Printed Fashion. The research focuses on digitally translating natural patterns into algorithms on the computer. It explores digital pattern design and multi-colour 3D printing on fabric, inspired by microscopic natural artefacts. This includes for example Butterfly wings which are made up of membranes which are covered by thousands of colourful scales and hairs. The digital designs are 3D printed in an innovative way, without any support material and directly on fabric in color.
