      Dec 2009 - Jun 2010
      Attorney

As an attorney with the Law Office of Chad M. Hayward I focused mainly on personal bankruptcy but on occasion took real estate cases and the rare outlier in other areas of the law. In this position I also had the opportunity to personally represent and defend the lead singer of a well-known rock band in a contract dispute with another band. Working for Chad Hayward was a unique, exciting, and fulfilling experience.

    • US Army Judge Advocate General Corps

      Oct 2010 - Jul 2016

I served as a staff attorney and advisor to the Garrison and Senior Mission Commanders on the Aberdeen Proving Ground Installation. I provided legal counsel on a broad spectrum of areas including, but not limited to, investigations, government contracting, ethics, regulatory compliance, FOIA, HIPAA, the Privacy Act, Labor and Employment Law, Fiscal issues, and just about any other area the Army needs. My job was extremely varied and rarely boring. APG provided one of the most unique operating environments imaginable in the world of an attorney. I wish I could say more. Show less I served and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I was the Brigade Trial Counsel and legal advisor for the 43d Sustainment Brigade (CENTCOM Materiel Recovery Element), a special court-martial jurisdiction consisting of over 3,500 Soldiers. I advised the Brigade Judge Advocate, Brigade Commander, three Battalion Commanders, and 20 Company Commanders on all aspects of military justice. I trained Soldiers and Commanders on the Uniform Code of Military Justice as well as administrative options available to Commanders for maintaining good order and discipline. I advocated for the Government during courts-martial, administrative elimination actions, and pre-trial confinement reviews. I advised and coordinated with military and civilian law enforcement personnel on enduring criminal investigations. I guided and supervised several paralegals and acted as a liaison between higher, adjacent, and lower commands concerning criminal justice matters. I also advised and trained on the laws of war and rules of engagement. When I was not deployed overseas I continued to serve as a part-time Special Assistant U.S. Attorney. Show less My second assignment as an Army Attorney was as the Special Assistant United States Attorney. I was responsible for prosecuting civilian felony and misdemeanor offenses committed on Fort Carson as well as traffic offenses. I led, trained, and supervised six part-time Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys and two full time paralegals. I was responsible for all phases of trial practice in U.S. District Court, including indictment, arraignment, motion hearings, trials, and sentencing hearings. I coordinated legal training for Military and Department of the Army Police and advised law enforcement agents on federal and state substantive and procedural criminal law issues. I also acted as a liaison with a variety of Federal agencies, to include the FBI, ICE, U.S. Marshal's Office, U.S. Probation Office, as well as the El Paso County District Attorney's Office. Show less My first assignment was as a staff attorney in the Administrative Law Department. I served as an ethics counselor, a part-time magistrate, a HIPAA and Privacy Act compliance expert, and bioethics board member for Evans Army Community Hospital. I also specialized in fiscal law, non-governmental organization fundraising, subpoena compliance, FOIA, and was a board member or legal advisor for various entities to include the healthcare-provider credentialing committee, program review board, suicide prevention and review board, sexual assault prevention and review board, and the commission on hiring. My practice also included assisting on and reviewing of law enforcement and administrative investigations as well as advising Commanders on an infinite range of topics. Show less
