      • Underwent a four -week summer practice at the department of surgery in which I learned important basic surgical skills such as preoperative assessment and pre-operative preparation of the patient, physical examination (inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation), routine laboratory tests (indications, diagnostic accuracy and value), radiology (routine chest radiograph, contrast studies, ultrasound scanning) and indication for CT and MRI in surgical patients. • Learnt about the role of endoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical patients and cost, risk and benefit of above-mentioned imaging tests. I was taught the bandaging of wounds and management of sterile and infected wounds. Worked in the outpatient clinic. • Administered i.m. and i.v. injections (under supervision), Intravenous fluid replacement, venous access, catheterization of the urine bladder, removal of drains, chest tubes, sutures, practical aspects of asepsis and antisepsis, hand disinfection techniques and general rules and discipline in the operating theatre.
