While in the Netherlands, I stayed with two different host families and attended school with my Dutch exchange students at their high school, t'Atrium. The Dutch students then came to stay with me and my family in DC. This was my first time being a cultural ambassador for the US, and it is what prompted my love for traveling.

      Under the guidance of PI Dr. John Marshall, I shadowed clinical oncologists in the Cancer Center and was involved in the research for the study which led to the publication of the attached article in Frontiers in Oncology.

      I conducted research in the Bukrinsky Lab on the link between HIV and atherosclerosis, and completed my high school Senior Capstone Project entitled, "Visualizing changes in intracellular cholesterol transport caused by HIV-1 infection". My research was published in the attached article in the scientific journal, AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses.

      At HMBL, I worked under Dr. Kurt Beschorner, and this research project was funded under an NIH R01 grant. During my time as an undergraduate researcher, I:- collaborated with graduate students on human subject testing in the gait lab;- processed VICON camera and motion capture data; and - applied the processes of forwards and inverse dynamics.My research at HMBL was published in the peer-reviewed academic journal, Applied Ergonomics. Additionally, the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)'s Traumatic Injury Prevention Cross-Sector Council recently approved posters that were made based on my research to spread awareness about the low-cost test I developed to determine if slip-resistant shoes need to be replaced.       I worked with other mechanical engineers in the ECR division of Philips Healthcare on a multi-functional team. I have:- helped support the development and improvement of defibrillators under Class III medical device regulations;- designed multiple tools and fixtures for receiving inspection and led 4 design reviews;- updated an entire drawing package and created new 3D models for an internal paddles accessory assembly;- logged 800+ hours of SolidWorks use;- created 4 ergonomic tools for internal R&D use that were essential to the resolution of 2 different CAPAs;- participated in a 3 day professional training on the design controls process;- gained experience communicating with senior design engineers, receiving inspectors, quality engineers, and procurement engineers.       IngMar Medical specializes in developing respiratory simulation systems for healthcare education and for testing mechanical ventilation products. I created anatomically correct breathing and bag masking mechanisms for the next generation of the RespiSim System. These projects included tasks such as:- assembling mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical components;- working closely with engineers and clinical respiratory therapy experts;- using a 3D printer to create prototype parts for testing;- vetting suppliers against the current ISO 9001, RoHS, and REACH standards.As the COVID-19 pandemic began during my internship, IngMar's demand increased exponentially over the course of a few weeks. Consequently, my role changed drastically and I seamlessly adapted to added responsibility on top of my ongoing projects. I performed new tasks including:- sourcing parts for production in high quantities;- assisting with project management tasks;- coordinating with vendors and suppliers by phone;- attending production team meetings to identify potential backlogs in the supply chain and internal solutions;- familiarizing myself with and working in new parts of the company. My role included aspects such as:- being responsible for the design, optimization, review, integration, and life-cycle management of products relating to sleep apnea face masks;- collaborating with the industrial design and marketing teams to balance cost, voice of customer, and aesthetic requirements;- optimizing mask design through internal and external product trialing, protocols, and documentation;- engineering qualification protocol design, testing, and documentation;- understanding biocompatibility and disinfection requirements for an FDA-regulated and reimbursable product;- developing design quality documentation, including product, part, and element requirements, DFMEAs, and risk assessments, in response to FDA 483 observations.
