      2009 - 2016
Doctor of Philosophy - PhD Genetics

Activities and Societies: President and founding member of the UCI Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club. ● Completed graduate thesis projects on DNA damage, aging, and stem cell homeostasis.● Assisted in the successful submission of several grant applications.● Mentored undergraduate researchers.● Taught multiple classes, including as sole instructor.

    • UC Irvine

      2002 - 2006
Bachelor of Science - BS Biology

      ● Dean's Honor List.● Undergraduate researcher in the lab of Professor Lynn Carpenter.

      Analytical Chemist

Although my degree was in biology, I quickly adapted to work in analytical chemistry after college. My supervisor recognized my aptitude for learning new skills, so I was given jobs in the traditional "wet" chemistry, HPLC, large-scale organic extraction, and IR spectroscopy departments. Other accomplishments include:● I prepared reagents and analyzed samples in an FDA-regulated lab following GLP guidelines, resulting in consistent on-time delivery of testing reports to clients.● I took on challenging client contract work, including identifying unknown product contaminants through exploratory testing.West Coast Analytical Services was a contract quality assurance testing laboratory. It has since been acquired by Bodycote, a large multi-national company. Show less

I joined Professor Olivier Cinquin's lab the same year he established it. This allowed me to start my thesis project from scratch, beginning with initial conception and proceeding all the way through thesis publication. My thesis presents a novel model for the genetic control of lifespan by the germline DNA damage response pathway. Other accomplishments include:● I collaborated with researchers in other scientific disciplines, including biomedical engineering, computer science, and physics, to develop novel experimental protocols.● I helped establish standard operating procedures for the laboratory, including for western blotting, qPCR, and genome modification.● I mentored junior laboratory personnel and guided the development of their research projects. The Cinquin lab takes a systems approach to biology, mixing genetics, computer modeling, and expression analysis to generate bold hypotheses. Research areas include evolutionary strategies for the minimization of stem cell mutation rate, automated image segmentation, and spatial modeling of the germline. Show less I joined the lab of Professor David Gardiner to get research experience in preparation for entry into my PhD program. I quickly came up to speed and balanced my own research project with maintaining the logistics of the lab. Other accomplishments include:● I supervised activities and provided training for junior laboratory personnel, ensuring the smooth operation of the lab.● I managed laboratory and vivarium operations, which ensured that researchers in our lab had access to hundreds of traceable marine vertebrates. The Gardiner lab studied limb regeneration in the salamander Ambystoma mexicanum (aka. axolotl), which are capable of regrowing most body parts, heal wounds without scarring, and are resistant to cancer formation. Professor David Gardiner retired in 2020. Show less

      Oct 2016 - Mar 2023
      Postdoctoral Scientist

I managed multiple research projects in the lab of Professor Shawn Ahmed, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications. This was accomplished by collaboration with scientists across disciplines. In addition, I assisted with authoring grants, successfully securing funding for the lab. Other accomplishments include:● I established and optimized CRISPR-based genome modification and molecular cloning SOPs for the lab, resulting in higher throughput production of constructs and transgenic microorganisms.● I balanced multiple research projects simultaneously, leading to multiple peer-reviewed publications.● As the senior-most bench scientist, I managed daily laboratory operations, including training and supervision of junior personnel, inventory maintenance, and safety audits. The Ahmed lab focuses on transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, gene silencing, telomere biology, and lifespan determination. The lab has multiple notable accomplishments, including the initial descriptions of multiple essential telomere genes, and continues to uncover novel biological phenomena. Show less

      Scientist II

My team worked together to develop a novel all-molecular cancer diagnostic product for high-throughput screening. We combined our individual strengths to increase sensitivity, reduce production cost, and mitigate technical risk. Other accomplishments include:● I collaborated with a cross-functional team to develop qPCR-based molecular diagnostic testing products, meeting all functional benchmarks within target timelines.● I spearheaded the establishment of a Nanopore long-read sequencing pipeline for use on clinical samples.● I adapted methods from established compendiums to monitor product stability and hazardous byproduct generation, leading to the resolution of multiple potential barriers to product launch.
