Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program, Cohort 5a Department of Energy Dec 2022 I was an Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program fellow in Cohort 5a. I worked extensively on the think piece around net zero lab modernization and contributed to several other think pieces. In part, this research shows that the cap on Science Line Item purchases is an impediment to the development and maintenance of world-class computing and other facilities. We also recommended a pre-fab catalog of LEED and Net Zero building designs that could speed construction and reduce costs… Show more I was an Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program fellow in Cohort 5a. Secretary of Energy Achievement Award US Department of Energy Feb 2021 I was part of a large team that received a Department of Energy Achievement Award, in honor of our efforts around COVID. Not only did I manage my division through the pandemic, I was the Biosciences Division Director, which means that I was also responsible for helping the lab set up a COVID testing strategy. I believe ORNL was the only lab that did not close for any time period during COVID. I believe ORNL was the only lab that did not close for any time period during COVID. We grabbed qPCR machines compatible with the CDC protocol for COVID testing, set up two laboratories within the Biosciences space, and rapidly created our own internal testing capability. ORNL was able to support thousands of on site employees this way and minimize disruptions to laboratory operations. Show less

Director of the Bringing Advanced Computing to Energy (BACTER) program Department of Energy Aug 2004 In my second year as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin, I was awarded a grant by the DOE to found a NIH-style training program at the interface of BER and ASCR programs under Ari Patrinos and Ed Oliver. The Bringing Advanced Computation to Energy Research (BACTER) program ran for 8 years. There centers were initially three centers awarded, but only UW-Madison’s was renewed. The Bringing Advanced Computation to Energy Research (BACTER) program ran for 8 years. There centers were initially three centers awarded, but only UW-Madison’s was renewed. Leadership changes in ASCR led to discontinuation of BACTER, who was managed by Christine Chalk during her time on the science side of BER. Our last year, we awarded $1m in carryover funds to seed active experimental-computational projects. Based on my work with BACTER and DOE, I was part of the reverse site visit team sent to promote the establishment of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center led by Tim Donohue. BACTER was unique in offering students access to full-time professional coding and science writing coaches. Show less

Sloan Research Fellowship Alfred P. Sloan Foundation I was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship in Computational and Evolutionary Molecular Biology in 2006. I believe I am the first mathematician to have won the award in this category. These funds helped launch my early research into the utilization of Artificial Intelligence in protein structure and design.
