Data transformation corporation (dtc)
Mar 1988 - Mar 1990Computer scientist• Designed and implemented a large software system to automate test procedures specified in The Minimum Operational Performance Standards For Mode S Aircraft Data Link Processor. Validated the processor design standards and test procedures for logical correctness and computer programmability. Detected and reported these and other types of errors in the standards document at RTCA (Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics) working group meetings, as well as rewrote some of these sections. These test procedures are now published as part of a national standard and published as the Minimum Operational Performance Standards For Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System/Mode Select (ATCRBS/MODE S) Airborne Data Link Processor Equipment.• Designed and developed the software system to allow an aircraft cockpit Multi-Purpose Control and Display Unit to receive, parse, and display Air Traffic Control and weather information that is digitally transmitted from the ground via data link. Sept 1992 - May 2008• Served as the Executive Secretariat of the Aeronautics Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) Infrastructure Interagency Working Group (IIWG) under the Aeronautics Science and Technology Subcommittee (ASTS) under the Committee on Technology (COT) of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC).• Responsible for all aspects of management for the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center research and development laboratories. They included The Research, Development & Human Factors Laboratory; The EnRoute Integration and Interoperability Facility; The Free Flight Technology Integration Laboratory; The Airway Facilities Tower Integration Laboratory; the new Commercial Space Transportation Laboratory; and the new Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) Laboratory. Show less • Responsible for the management of research and development activities, technologies, personnel, facility, budget, etc for The Research, Development & Human Factors Laboratory, a world-class laboratory addressing the FAA's human factors issues such as Air Traffic Control (ATC) computer-human-interface design, prototyping and evaluation, workload assessment, situational awareness and more.• Responsibilities included experiment planning, coordination, logistics, prioritization and scheduling; sponsor dialogue, requirements, deliverables and satisfaction; contractor activities, as well as all other management responsibilities. This work included En Route, Terminal, Oceanic and Airway Facilities (TechOps) domains.• Completed a detail at the Eurocontrol Experimental Centre (EEC) in France, assisting them in the design and implementation of their new Human Factors Laboratory. Show less • Responsible for the creation and development of the FAA Technical Center's Virtual Reality (VR) Laboratory. Handled all system design, budget, procurements, delivery of components, installation, integration, laboratory issues, maintenance contracts, system operation, systems administration and all the project development using the system. Led the laboratory and its personnel to complete dozens of 3-dimensional, real-time, computer graphics visualizations/evaluations for various FAA organizations as well as the Federal Air Marshals, the National Transportation Safety Board, the State Department and more. FAA work was in the areas of En Route, Terminal, Airways Facilities, Towers, Airports and more.• Appeared on at least two different Discovery Channel documentaries and a few major publications. Show less • Develop and modify NASA software for the lab's En Route Air Traffic Control (ATC) display simulation systems. Served as the laboratory expert in the commercial ATC display simulation system, ATCoach by UFA, which replaced the NASA system in the lab.• Prototyped and simulated the Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) Maintenance Control Center (AMCC) system and the Monitor & Control (M&C) console displays for various studies.• Researched, specified, procured, installed and learned software that the lab would use for rapid prototyping and evaluation of En Route and Terminal ATC displays and systems. Led team to prototype and simulate the proposed Automated En Route ATC (AERA) computer-human interface for air traffic control. Show less
