Technical Leadership in Natural Language Processing (Trailblazer Award) Government Administration and Judiciary Department, MITRE 2021 Karine is the Natural Language Processing (NLP) thought leader on our JEMC Applied Research & Development team. She set the vision for the Advanced Narrative Analytics System Infrastructure (ANAnSI) platform which has been used to address several challenges at the US Courts. For example, the Child Pornography Risk Assessment Study initiative uses natural language processing to automate the extraction of critical information from thousands of documents to assess the risk of recidivism for offenders. In this case, the technology enabled an otherwise impossibly daunting task, and eased the psychological burden on probation officers from reading the emotionally challenging sex offender case documents. Karine demonstrated her commitment to the mission in both her technical strength performing the research and analysis to solve complex problems, and also her willingness and diligence in reading the case documents, which was critical to designing the prototype. Our US Courts sponsor was effusive in her feedback about Karine, noting that, "She is a perfectionist and sets the bar really high for delivery. She is also very good at recommending future paths to the users with high value proposition. She was very passionate about delivery results with a high degree of accuracy. If she discovered any anomalies, she worked closely with the rest of the team to find out the root cause of the problem." In addition to her pioneering direct work, she has worked with the Miami site office in building a partnership with Florida International University, collaborating with Dr. Mark Finlayson and his graduate students on broadening the capabilities of NLP technologies. This award is in recognition of your professional prominence and tireless dedication to applying NLP to real-world problems. Show less
