      Clinical assistant

Clinical assistants (CA) in Central Specimen Reception (CSR) are responsible for the processing and appropriate distribution of pathology requests from hospital in and out patients. When specimens are received, it is the role of the CA to prioritise from critically urgent to routine. CSR staff then assign each pathology request a unique ID number and enter the requested tests into the Pathology Queensland (PQ) computer system Auslab. Depending on the testing required, specimens are then prepared appropriately. This could include centrifuging, separating plasma, splitting, and more. Specimens that are tested within the Prince Charles laboratory are distributed to the appropriate departments by hand or via the Lamson system. Specimens that require testing at other PQ laboratories such as the Royal Brisbane or Princess Alexandra are packed by CSR staff and transported via courier. CSR staff are also required to answer a broad range of phone enquiries from healthcare workers at the TPCH, other public hospitals, internal and external PQ laboratories, PQ customers, and more. Other general laboratory tasks are also undertaken including but not limited to inventory control, routine maintenance, and investigating lost specimens. CSR is a fast paced and high pressure environment that requires prioritisation, the ability to quickly to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. broad knowledge of testing offered by PQ, and ability to successfully utilise PQ computer systems.
