    • Monsanto Company and Union Carbide Corp [product manufacturing companies]

      Jan 1966 - Jan 1970
      Process Engineer and Project Engineer

James D. Madden performed process / project engineering in industrial manufacturing facilities, which manufactured chemicals and plastics, and also in off-site engineering offices associated with manufacturing facilities. This engineering included the engineering of equipment, machinery, piping and control instrumentation, and the associated systems, to support these manufacturing facilities. The prime emphasis in the earlier years in this work included providing on-site technical assistance for the industrial operations, participating on-site in industrial operations, and conducting industrial operations studies and equipment operation studies on-site in the industrial facilities, with some design of equipment and facility improvements. The prime emphasis in later years shifted to designing more facility improvements, including equipment, piping, instrumentation, control systems, and facilities layout, with specification of materials of construction and the design requirements for safe and efficient operation of the equipment and facilities, including the use of safeguards and warnings. Continued work on-site within the industrial facilities included industrial operations studies and equipment operation studies in support of the primary design engineering work. The engineering design work in the off-site engineering office included designing additions to existing mnufacturing facilities and designing all new manufacturing facilities, including engineering design of all the components noted above. As part of the work, James D. Madden participated on-site in the commissioning of a new manufacturing facility, consisting of construction assistance as the construction was completed, and participated on-site in the start-up (initial operation) of this new manufacturing facility. • MW Kellogg and Litwin Company [engineering and construction companies]

      Jan 1970 - Jan 1977
Principal and Sr. Systems Engineer, Sr. Process Engineer

James D. Madden supervised and performed engineering and safety design for industrial facilities and components, to applicable codes, standards and safety requirements, with design for appropriate materials, (safe)guards and warnings. The facility components included equipment, machinery, piping, piping systems, instrumentation, controls and safety systems. The work also included layout of equipment and machinery and control panels and annunciators for safe operation. James D. Madden's work included Construction Assistance, including several months onsite at an industrial complex under construction, providing solutions for engineering aspects of construction problems, designs for equipment and systems to be added or revised, and consultation on facility and equipment operation with the operations staff.James D. Madden's work included Operational Facilities studies, including studies of industrial operations, equipment operation, facility operation and design of operating manufacturing facilities to establish design parameters for use in revisions to the facilities and/or design of additional facilities.James D. Madden's work included performing engineering design in the safety and environmental area, including fire protection and suppression systems, flares and safety systems for flare fields, and pollution control systems; and leading a team of engineers conducting an extensive facility-wide safety operations study to design additional safety facilities for a refinery, manufacturing facility, and associated industrial facilities.James D. Madden also supervised, managed and participated with engineers writing Design Manuals for equipment, machinery, piping, piping systems, valves, instrumentation and control systems, to meet Codes and Standards, and also writing a Design Manual for Boiler Systems to meet the ASME Boiler Code and other Codes and Safety Standards.James D. Madden conducted courses in engineering design for the company's design engineers. Show less
