  Senior Researcher

  My main research focused on analysis of the contribution of scientific research to technological development and innovation in Europe, through the use of citations to scientific paper in patents. Next to various academic tasks (e.g. publishing, teaching of specific courses on business plan development, supervision and coaching of master thesis students), I was also involved in various applied research projects for the Flemish government, sectors federations and the European Commission.

  As a senior expert and team leader, I have advised a wide range of clients such as the European Commission (various DGs), national governments and regions, funding agencies, research centres and sector federations on topics related to research (including higher education) and innovation policy and strategy, including finance, and industrial competitiveness. In this position, I was responsible of the entire project delivery and advisory cycle, from proposal development to delivery of the advisory results, including quality management and client relationship. My activities focused on the ex-ante development and optimisation of research and innovation policies, governance and finance, and the ex-post assessment and evaluation of the effectiveness of public policy actions. Specific areas of expertise concerned: - EU financing schemes; - deployment of new technologies, and in particular key enabling technologies; innovation policy systems and governance; - university financing; - doctoral training and researcher mobility; - IP management and technology transfer; - performance of research and technology organisations. I developed and presented numerous peer reviewed publications (books and scientific articles).Methodologically I developed strong expertise in monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment, foresight and strategic outlook techniques (like scenario planning and SWOT analysis), data analysis and indicator development. Through my extensive work at IDEA, I have contributed to more effective R&D and innovation policies and actions in Europe. Show less

  As a Sr. Advisor I analysed and improved access-to-finance conditions in strategic (emerging) innovative sectors in the European economy. One of my main activities was the translation of policy objectives (from the European Commission, mainly DG RTD) into finance related interventions such as the development of new financial instruments or other adjacent measures. I also prepared potential beneficiaries (corporates and public sector entities) for future due diligence in the EIB. Represented the EIB at various events and expert working groups. Show less
