I taught reading and written composition for advanced students.   During this short Summer ESL program, I created and implemented lesson plans for non-native speakers entering their junior year at MIAD from MIAD’s sister school in Bangkok, Thailand. I integrated English lesson plans with analysis of art, design, and advertising for the twelve-week course. The lessons concentrated on advanced speaking and writing skills, and I conducted portfolio review of accumulated work.

  As ESL Coordinator, I provided academic support for international students from various countries working on written compositions. I also provided testing accommodations for international students through the Learning Resource Center. In addition, I advised students with academic and/or cultural adjustment issues and I also advised faculty on how to best serve international students in their classes. I co-developed an academic support program for students on academic probation and I helped redesign the university Mentor Program. I participated in and led international service trips to Kenya and India through the Department of Servant Leadership. I also served on the Early Alert committee dedicated to identifying and assisting academically and emotionally at-risk students on campus. Finally, I assisted in running the Writing Center managing and assisting writing tutors who helped their peers with composition assignments. Show less

  I taught two sections (12 credits total) of composition for international students earning credit towards their Bachelor's Degree. In addition, I developed lesson plans to support students in their advancement of reading and writing in a second language. I also conferenced with and advise students on the writing process and support students as they undertake academic life in a new culture. I assisted in placement of incoming students in the correct level of ESL Composition. Finally, I participated in portfolio review of students in the ESL Composition Credit Writing Sequence. I also worked on curriculum articulation and alignment, including leading the Curriculum Committee. I served as adviser for students and instructors regarding placement and classroom issues.
