Research Scientist, Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean

I was employed by the UW Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean, but my office and immediate supervisor were at PMEL. My responsabilities were to conduct oceanographic research with the PMEL carbon group, make inorganic carbon measurements and participate in oceanographic cruises as needed. I am responsible for creating and implementing all strategies, policies, procedures and best practices needed to support the optimal performance of a $50M research laboratory. I manage and coordinate the performance of ~200 staff including scientists, engineers, administrative staff, and IT support personnel. Working with NOAA headquarters and congress, I provide the scientific leadership and vision to keep the laboratory on the cutting edge of science and relevant to NOAA's mission. My research addressed the role of the ocean in the global carbon cycle. In particular, my work centered on interpreting ocean inorganic carbon measurements and understanding ocean acidification. I managed an annual budget of ~$2M and helped supervise a research team of 10. Conducted oceanographic research and helped manage the PMEL carbon research group. Made inorganic carbon measurements and participated in oceanographic cruises as needed. Applied for and administered research budgets for the group. Published scientific articles based on research.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship oversees most organized research units on campus. The vice provost serves as the campus representative for research with individuals, groups and agencies working to enhance UH Mānoa’s research programs and capabilities. We are charged with managing strategic initiatives, research program development, research information systems, research and technology transfer, research commercialization and industrial support, and the university’s relationship with the Office of Research Services. Show less Located in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, SOEST is a world-class research and academic institution with ~1,000 employees focused on understanding our world and how it is being impacted by human activity. SOEST scientists and engineers are actively engaged in research aimed at identifying solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges through a sustained system of Earth and planetary observations, modeling, and technology development. As Associate Dean for Research, I help facilitate and enhance the research enterprise in SOEST. Show less HIMB’s mission is to conduct, promote and support research and training in tropical marine biology and is a world leader in research aimed at understanding and conserving tropical marine ecosystems. HIMB is home to over 150 researchers, postdocs, students and staff who leverage the unique setting to implement cutting edge research and develop new technologies that advance marine stewardship and coastal biodiversity both in Hawai‘i and globally. The HIMB Director oversees all activities of the institute located on Coconut Island, Oahu. I filled the interim director roll for half a year until a new permanent director was hired. Show less
