    • Stotler & Company

      Jun 1987 - Aug 1990
      Broker & Securities Analyst

Institutional and retail broker and analyst for Stotler & Company, covering the money markets from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (International Monetary Market), with research department coverage of the same, where I authored a daily wire and provided trade outlook and strategies. Primary market coverage included Eurodollar Futures (SOFR Futures), T-Bill Futures, Eurodollar Options (SOFR Options), calendar spreads, credit spreads, and swaps (fixed and floating hedge strategies). Secondary market coverage included FX Futures, FX Options, and S&P 500 Options. This role was instrumental in my acquiring the skills of detailed pricing, modeling, and commentary. It was my first full time position, and what a way to start, as I experienced the October, ‘87 market crash while on the trading floor. KAOS!𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Covered institutional and retail brokerage accounts through technical and pricing analysis of the money market.•Authored daily wire and quarterly trade recommendations by fair value pricing, forecasting, and chart analysis.•Conducted weekly “squawk box” call on Eurodollar (SOFR) and money market conditions, and trade updates.𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Created fair value pricing models for Eurodollar (SOFR) Futures and spreads using cash market forward rates.•Aided customer’s options trading through monitoring variables affecting standard Black-Scholes model.•Made successful customer trade recommendations based on forecasts for short rates, including Fed Funds. My experiences and the skills I built while at the IMM have provided support in the years since; what I learned from a first row seat in the debt markets, auctions, valuation, modeling, and real-time pricing are a foundation for my work today. My role is somewhat different now, but delivering a similar level of real-time results and pricing is what I strive for in my work with operating companies. Show less

    • TransMarket Group

      May 1993 - Apr 1996
      Proprietary Trader Interest Rate Group

Proprietary trader, Interest Rate Group, for Chicago-based proprietary trading and clearing services firm. My role was now trader –rather than broker— as had been the case in my previous positions with Cargill Investor Services and Stotler & Co. I was active in trading government securities, futures, and options with a focus on the “short end of the curve” (five year maturities and under). The security analysis skills and systems I developed while in brokerage, including models for analyzing trends, hedging simulation, security valuation, and rich/cheap comparison, were put to work. My role required me to anticipate changes in interest rates, relative changes between maturities (yield curve), and market anomalies (rich-cheap consideration for cheapest to deliver).𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Managed a trading book by analyzing market trends, anticipation of rate changes, and security valuation.•Analyzed security prices by programming models using Excel, @Analyst, Bloomberg, and TradeStation.•Created profitable trade outcomes by pricing analysis, trade execution, and systematic risk management.𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Gained experience in trading Eurodollar / SOFR Futures, Fed Funds Futures, 2 Year and 5 Year cash Treasuries.•Advised Interest Rate Group of changes to short-term market rates to help anticipate funding needs.•Designed a systematic trading approach, with designated entry, exit, and consideration of risk-reward.•Used risk management techniques aided by the use of Excel, Bloomberg, @Analyst, and TradeStation. My experience at TransMarket trained me to reconsider market biases, price and manage risk, and simplify business execution rules. I consider these experiences, and use the skills I developed, in my current role as a financial manager (CFO, controller), including those related to modeling, real-time reporting and metrics, risk management, and seeking trade reward. • Pomeroy Markets

      May 1996 - Mar 1999
      President/Founder

Founder of accounting, tax, and consulting practice in Chicago. My practice was founded after leaving a trading career at TransMarket –opting for small business advisory services. As I transitioned to business advisory, I was struck by the lack of integration between various data pools (business transactional, payroll, tax, inventory, asset, etc), and the resulting latency with which systems returned results and metrics to business owners. Not unexpected after having real-time market/security data and analytic services at my disposal in my previous role. This sent me on a quest –still alive to this day— to integrate data sources, analyze, and report on them in a similar real-time fashion. I built relationships with business owners, bankers, consultants and auditors, and enrolled in the DePaul University Accounting Studies program for credit hours required for the CPA exam. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Serviced a select group of Chicago businesses by compiling financial statements and reviewing results. •Managed tax compliance by filing personal, corporate, payroll, and sales tax returns.•Offered financial/business planning by compensation structuring, compliance review, and market analysis.•Provided financing advisory through review and solicitation of business finance sources from banks and others.𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Created an initial group of business and personal customers through personal solicitation and word of mouth.•Implemented first generation Internet data transfer of customer accounting data from client to my offices.•Completed 32 of 40 hours of accounting credits at DePaul University required for the CPA exam.Building Pomeroy Markets was an entrepreneur effort aimed at serving multiple businesses and their owners, and initiated my lifelong passion of creating real-time business data analysis through dashboards and other real-time reporting layers. • Rome Associates

      Apr 1999 - Apr 2004
      Manager Rome CFO

Manager of RomeCFO, an accounting outsource advisory/practice of Rome Associates a CPA/business consulting firm in Chicago. Our mission was to evolve the accounting, or “write-up,” practice into an efficient, value-added, and integrated service offering for businesses seeking to outsource accounting, controller, and accounting technology functions. To meet this mission, we adopted the first generation of Cloud-based accounting/ERP applications, and utilized web-transfer of client accounting data when adoption was not feasible (early Cloud platforms were short on features). Work and exams were an all-consuming effort, as I studied to pass the CPA, began graduate school at DePaul University for computer science, and lobbied clients and prospects to adopt web apps as fixed-point access to enterprise applications was beginning to fade.𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Managed 5 staff servicing deadlines for 30 clients by ensuring fin. state., tax, and advisory deliverables were met.•Ensured quality of reporting through rigorous account balance review to ensure clients were prepared for audit.•Adoption of early ERP systems by review of functional requirements and configuration of Intacct and NetLedger.•Solicited service and software contracts by discovery of needs for outsourcing, advisory, funding, tax, and audit.𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀)•Increased adoption of web apps for an initial service group of 12 customers for use of Intacct, NetLedger.•Configured Intacct, NetLedger, and other systems, for reporting per GAAP and managerial standards.•Increased professional service fees through personal solicitation efforts ~$325K (total practice ~$3MM annual).•Passed CPA exam and completed 64 of 72 credit hours required for Master of Science, DePaul University. Leaving Rome Associates was necessary, and better opportunity lay ahead in building a practice with Wes Naviaux, Jeremy Dubow, and Josh Harris (NDH). Show less
