NOLS gives students of all ages the opportunity to traverse some of the most remote and secluded stretches of the world through guided expedition. As a student on the NOLS Amazon course, I spent roughly a month canoeing through the Amazon River Basin of Brazil with 11 other students and 3 instructors. During this time we did not establish contact with anyone outside the group. This forced me to expand my comfort limits to levels previously unprecedented. The objective of the trip (and NOLS in general) is to establish and develop leadership and teamwork skills while challenging you mentally and physically. Upon completion of the course, I earned 8 credit hours in Organizational Leadership, Leadership Techniques, Environmental Studies, and Risk Assessment/Skills Practicum. Show less
