I started out my professional career at RAF Haltons No 1 School of Technical Trade Training as a mechanical aviation apprentice which I graduated from with my trade papers and a BTEC OND in aerospace engineering.I went to my first Squadron No 7 Sqn at RAF Odiham as a Junior technician on the Chinook Mk1 or C model. I performed first line routine mainenance activities and preparation and recovery from flight tasks. I undertook operational service with 7 Sqn in the Balkans, and Northern Ireland, and non operational detachments across the UK, Europe, America, and the Falkland Islands in support of the Chinook fleet, .I transferred to my second Squadron No 18 Sqn at RAF Odiham in 1996. I undertook similar activities to my previous role again supporting operational activities in the Balkans, and non operational support in the Flakland Islands, Egypt, and across Europe. In 1997 I had a change of direction and moved into second line support in the engine deep strip and testing facilty which was part of MESF at RAF Odiham. Duties here included deep strip and rebuild of Lycoming T55 712 engines fitted to the the then Mk2 Chinook or D model. I graduated from the strip facility into full functional and fault rectification of these engines on the HUETH engine test facility for return to the customer. We also stripped rebuilt, and tested the titan APU's that are fitted to Chinooks.During this time I was seconded to the Emergency Fire Brigade Strike Relief team to cover Essex fire brigade strike.I moved internally from the engine test facility into a role in the Early Failure Detection Centre predicting failures and extending the in service life lengths of the major drive components of the Chinook utilizing spectrometric oil analysis programs, monitoring ferrous materials captured on magnetic detector plugs and filters, and utilising particulate measuring equipment. I supported operational activities in Afghanistan and Iraq in a war-time role in this position. Show less
