This study analyzes the transition from traditional biomass to the uptake of clean cooking fuels and technologies in Nepal. An exhaustive literature review and governmental and non-governmental reports find and discusses that 54% and 46% of Nepalese households primarily rely on polluting and clean fuels, respectively for usual cooking. The study highlights that Karnali province relies heavily on firewood, while Bagmati province utilizes liquified petroleum gas. The study traces the history of clean cooking transition, from prefabricated ceramic improved cookstoves in 1950s to electric cooking in 1990s, and identifies barriers such as social, economic, technological, and policy. Governmental achievements towards clean cooking over successive plans meet 54% of cumulative national targets. Overall, the study outlines the absence of electric cooking in preceding plans and suggests reviewing local governmental actions and promoting agency efforts in integrating the national plans into the local budgets and programs.
