    • Client: Western Washington University

      Jan 2015 - Jan 2017
Lead Author, Big World, Small Planet

I served as lead author for Facing the Future's new high school-level sustainability and global issues series, Big World, Small Planet. The series offers learners an opportunity to engage with local and global sustainability issues and helps learners develop a sustainability worldview, a positive future focus and a sense of agency. My role was to co-create the series' learning objectives and scope, write content, design activities, create nature connection reflections, and develop the Teacher Edition. Early in the project, I coordinated the work with Western Washington University faculty, student assistants and another author. I worked closely with the copy editor and graphic designer to help develop a final product. I supported the marketing process by identifying potential customers and preparing marketing materials.Big World, Small Planet covers core concepts and thinking strategies like big ideas of sustainability, systems thinking and using ecological principles to solve sustainability issues. Learners apply concepts and strategies to their own lives, as well as real-world issues including biodiversity, food, water, air, energy, consumerism and climate change. The series is presented in four modules, each covering four weeks of text, hands-on activities and nature connection reflections. Teacher Editions are available for each module. These editions present teaching strategies as well as solutions for the limited number of question-and-answer activities, like those used to practice using systems thinking tools. The interdisciplinary series aligns with Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core English Language Arts Standards and National Council for the Social Studies Thematic Strands. The North American Association of Environmental Education's best practices for environmental literacy were used throughout, including interdependence, systems thinking, a sense of place, roots in the real world, and experiential learning. Sept 2016 - Oct 2016
      Sustainable Business Class Facilitator

Angeles Workshop School's high school students undertook a year-long project to develop businesses. We spent four weeks at the beginning of the project exploring ways to make their businesses environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. I developed a custom program for the project, including presentations, hands-on activities and discussions. The program included presenting sustainability principles, identifying ways to incorporate these principles into business strategies, evaluating examples of businesses that have adopted sustainable practices, and coaching the students on building sustainability principles into their business ideas. • Client: Global Classroom and Facing the Future

      Jan 2017 - Jan 2017
      Educator's Workshop Facilitator

I created and facilitated Global Classroom's educator workshop, "Bringing Sustainability into Your Classroom." Teachers were given an overview of sustainability education and investigated frameworks for looking at the world, exploring values and finding solutions to bring about a more sustainable world. The session also looked at ways to build sustainability skills and habits, like personal responsibility and interconnectedness, and provided tangible ways to connect sustainability to classroom projects and curriculum. During a hands-on workshop, teachers applied sustainability content to their own curriculum. Teachers received three clock hours (with STEM components) for attending the workshop. Show less

    • Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation

      Jan 2018 - May 2019
      California Program Manager and Educator

The Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF) has been offering sustainability education-focused professional development to teachers, school administrators, informal educators and others since 2003. CELF provides proven, systematic, comprehensive training to help schools incorporate sustainability big ideas into their curriculum, campus activities and community relationships through place- and project-based learning. During my time at CELF, the organization worked with the two largest school districts in the U.S.: New York City Department of Education and the Los Angeles Unified School District. My role was to expand CELF's presence in California and work directly with our partner schools to implement their sustainability programs. Work included creating and delivering professional development workshops for teachers and school administrators, facilitating and supporting teachers as they developed and implemented sustainability elements into their curriculum, working on-site with school staff to identify campus sustainability initiatives, preparing status reports for grant funders and Board members, and conducting outreach to prospective school clients. Our goal was to help all students understand how to live responsibly in alignment with Earth's natural systems and build a just, sustainable future for all. Show less
