  While on watch in the Engine Control Room (ECR) during the hours assigned by the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer oversees the proper / safe operation of all engineering systems and equipment. Some examples of Watch duties include:Responsible for assuming the watch as per STCW and as per the guidance in the SMS.Oversee the preparation of the main and auxiliary machinery for operation.Require isolation (including lock-out / tag-out or similar) of electrical and other systems and see that required safety permits and protective equipment are used before work on such systems is started.Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment. Verify proper operation of pollution prevention equipment such as Bilge Water Treatment System, sludge tank system, Advanced Waste Purification System (AWPS), incinerators, bilge ballast and fuel pumping systems in compliance with applicable environmental and regulatory requirements.Take appropriate safety precautions during the watch and take immediate action to respond to a fire, accident, pollution discharge, or other emergency. All 2nd Engineers should be capable of leading a fire/response team to respond to an emergency in the engine roomAt all times, the Second Engineer is responsible for the guidance and direction of all members of their team: the Third Engineers Senior, Third Engineers and Motorman As and Bs. However, while duties during the watch are well-defined, the supervision of the guaranteed and voluntary overtime hours of Crew Members is of particular significance. These hours are to be used to good effect and as seen appropriate by the Second Engineer. The scope of such work is not limited to any specific items of machinery or working spaces or specific tasks. If there is no requirement for voluntary overtime to be worked, the Second Engineer in charge clearly communicates it to the relevant Crew Members. Show less • Accountable for all watch-keeping routines listed in major responsibilities.• Responsible for taking over and accepting a watch.• Maintains the machinery space and log book.• Responsible for handing over the watch.• Assists in preparation of the main and auxiliary machinery for operation.• Assists in the safe and correct operation and maintenance requirements of the machinery systems.• Responsible for routine pumping operations.• Responsible for operation of the bilge, ballast and fuel pumping systems.• Takes safety precautions during the watch and takes immediate action in case of a fire or accident, with particular reference to oil systems.• Monitors isolation of electrical and other types of plants, and verifies the required protection equipment is used before working on them.• Observes precautions to prevent pollution to the environment, and uses pollution prevention equipment such as oily water separators, sludge tank systems and sewage disposal plants.• Provides professional and social guidance to subordinates by exemplary personal behavior.• Emergency Duties as specified in the ship Assembly Plan• Maintains good team work with the other Engine Room personnel.
