Very complex reservoirs, upswept oil volumes, and deeper targets are now very common scenarios that pose a difficult challenge to maximize production and sweep efficiency. In order to address this challenge the design and drilling of more complex extended reach and multilateral wells has become common practice. Saudi Aramco (the worlds largest oil producer) is one of the leading companies designing and drilling wells with very complex topology. Saudi Aramco has large number of wells equipped with active inflow control valves (ICV) and passive inflow control devices (ICD) and more planned to be drilled soon. The cost involved in the deployment and maintenance of these wells and equipment has made this a target for optimization of production (and/or recovery), and well configuration. Potentially, optimization of design and implementation, will extend the life of the well through improved well performance, improved sweep efficiency and reduced investment and operating costs.Schlumberger and Saudi Aramco joined forces in a collaborative project to design and implement a system to streamline the workflow that enabled both well placement optimization and completion design optimization, incorporating uncertainty, in one software application, and within a time scale of 2-3 days per well.The major significance of this work is the provision of a system to enable engineers to produce an optimal well configuration given geological, production, well placement and completion (ICD) uncertainties in a timely fashion. The use of optimization assists the engineer in designing an optimal solution given many variables. Show less
