The illustrations and overall design then helped set the tone and journey through the story, as well as visualize facts and data to provide context on the issue. The research and methodology… Show more This audio-visual interactive provided insight into the range of mental health issues new mothers around the world face, which is a hugely underreported issue. The story was particularly engaging because readers heard directly from these mothers and learned of their experiences in their own words. The illustrations and overall design then helped set the tone and journey through the story, as well as visualize facts and data to provide context on the issue. The research and methodology took place over the course of one year to identify mothers who wanted to share their experiences and to determine the most important topics and data to include in the story. This involved CNN building a database of health providers and civil society organizations supporting perinatal mental health in different countries around the world, reaching out to them to facilitate access to women in their networks and then find out which women were willing to participate using options such as diary entries and voice notes.The aim was to find people with different health, social, economic and geographical contexts, to identify local factors around maternal health and highlight global gaps and similarities.The audio accounts were edited to provide concise insight into the issues identified and for readers to learn about them through the mother's own voices. The story was read and listened to by more than 180,000 people and had particularly strong engagement on social media, reaching hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and being shared by a range of experts, activists and organizations working on maternal mental health.
