  • About me

    Simulation expert, former McKinsey

  • Education

    • University of Southampton

      2005 - 2009
Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Aerospace Engineering First Class Honours

Activities and Societies: President of Photographic Society (organised trips, trainings, meetings and competitions); Treasurer of Photographic Society (Budget of £1, 200); Chess Society member playing in local league During his BEng in Aerospace Engineering, Ben studied the basics of aerospace design, engine performance, materials, aerodynamics and astronautics. In the final year, he chose the "Engineering Management" theme, taking additional modules in management, accounting and finance for engineers.Ben's Bachelor thesis entitled "Design, build and test of a Lockwood pulse-jet engine" scored 69 % (Upper Second Class).

    • University of Southampton

      2010 - 2014
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Complex Systems Simulation Minor corrections

Activities and Societies: EPSRC scholarship As part of the Institute for Complex Systems Simulation, Ben's work focused on improving the design process of complex aerospace products by introducing operational simulations early into the development process. Ben developed a generic design environment for aerospace products (aircraft, helicopters, UAS) that analysed the planned mission environment in order to feed back critical information to the designer.Ben successfully defended his thesis with minor corrections in May 2014.

  • Experience

    • Rolls-Royce

      Jun 2007 - Sept 2007
      Summer Internship with Test Quality

During his first summer internship, Ben joined the Test Quality department that checks engines before shipment to customers and tests new engine developments on large custom-build engine test-beds. Ben developed a VB.NET based tool to analyze live and historical data of nine engine test-beds. This allowed daily schedule optimization and capacity utilization increase. Moreover, Ben worked in a laboratory analyzing engine oil composition of customer engines to reduce engine inhibit times. • Rolls-Royce

      Jul 2008 - Sept 2008
Summer Internship with Life Cycle Analysis

During this internship, Ben worked as part of the LCA team looking into engine parts risk reviews for the Trent XWB engine. Ben analyzed the historical performance of the CRIC (Combustion Rear Inner Casing) and HP & IP Turbine cases. He aggregated the data and presented at multidisciplinary risk review meetings concerning those parts. Moreover, Ben researched semantic web search engines to improve the KBE (knowledge-based engineering) processes at Rolls-Royce.

    • DseConsulting LTD

      Aug 2013 - Oct 2013
      Modelling Consultant

Ben joined dseConsulting to work on a manpower modelling project for Aspire Consulting and the MoD. By implementing a novel visual animation approach based on circles (not unlike Google+ circles), he was able to convey complex operational processes in a simple manner to the client. Ben delivered all requirements on time and above expectation, leading to follow on work from the MoD.

    • Decision Lab

      Feb 2014 - Jan 2017

Ben jointly lead the Aerospace & Defence business unit of decisionLab. He was responsible for the project management operations and adviced on business development and client relations. On a day-to-day basis, Ben managed team members to complete tasks within budget, liaised with clients to ensure satisfaction and supported modelling activities directly. He as referred to as the "simulation Jedi" by his co-workers and took great effort in teaching them the "secret sauce" of good modelling. In parallel, Ben always thought about improving decisionLab internally. He upgraded the old Knowledge Base system (that he introduced 2 years earlier) to use latest technology and make editing and searching much easier. Also, he introducing GitHub for software development in decisionLab, creating a workshop and video lectures for future employees to quickly grasp the concepts. Show less As senior modeller, Ben is responsible for project delivery, including establishing the client need, delivering to that need, testing and deploying to the client. Often, clients are surprised by the visual appearance of a model: Ben is passionate about useful (not fancy) model animation. Ideally, a client can intuitively navigate a model and say “this is the world I live in”. In the past, he has developed a unique circle-based animation for any hierarchical model. Ben has also shown initiative in developing a knowledge base for his company that enables employees to share their specific knowledge with others in a simple manner. Show less

      • Managing Consultant

        Jan 2016 - Jan 2017
      • Senior modeller

        Feb 2014 - Dec 2015
    • DseConsulting

      May 2014 - Jan 2017
      AnyLogic software trainer

Several times a year, Ben breaks out of his consulting routine, running the official AnyLogic training course for 6-15 attendees (mostly professionals and academics). Often, Ben runs the course with a co-trainer that he leads to provide a useful learning experience for the students. The course lasts three days and introduces participants to simulation modelling in general, AnyLogic in particular and the three major modelling paradigms (agent-based, discrete-event and system dynamics).Ben evolved the traditional training concept which used separate theory and practical sessions. He now employs a mixed approach where he introduces theoretical bits at the appropriate practical steps. Attendees appreciate the more practical approach a lot:"The idea of breaking up theory with practice is very good.""Ben is very good at explaining things, especially to a novice like myself!""Ben made the course very easy to follow, clearly explaining each aspect.""Ben did an amazing job keeping us all in the loop with a pretty diverse set of skills." • McKinsey & Company

      Mar 2017 - Aug 2018
      Senior Analytics Fellow

Beyond serving clients in mining, supply-chain and procurement, Ben aimed to spread simulation within the Firm's Advanced Analytics team. His vision was to have at least one person on each study that can build simple simulation models, similar to any consultant being able to build Excel models nowadays.Ben started an internal group of simulation practitioners to bring people together. He launched a monthly newsletter and his models raised a lot of interest with senior partners at the firm. Show less
