The computational study using a high order spectral element flow solver (Nek5000) demonstrates that the interactions between the overlying fluid and the riblets can result in a few flow phenomena that affect the wall shear stress distribution. Varying the groove size and shape separately regulates the interactions and in turn the wall shear stress. In particular, a change in the shape can have a rather significant effect on the flow field within the groove, and the overall flow topology on the riblet wall. Lastly, a numerical study is designed by incorporating a riblet-like surface in a Taylor-Couette setup to examine the impact of vortex motions in the form of secondary vortices and taylor vortices on the torque generation. The research project aims to set up an efficient and reliable numerical framework to investigate turbulent drag reduction using an array of shallow dimples. The numerical framework employs a wall-resolved Large-eddy simulation (LES) approach coupled with a high order spectral element flow solver to produce high-fidelity simulation data over a reasonable range of flow Reynolds number. The simulations have been successful in reproducing the qualitative trend of percentage drag reduction against flow Reynolds number measured in the earlier experiments. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are also performed to elucidate the intricate effects of dimple geometry on near-wall turbulence activities. Show less
