Bachelor of Science - BS Psychology Class I (1st)

Activities and Societies: Nightline (Social Secretary and volunteer) My interest in human behaviour drew me towards Psychology at Birmingham. My final year project investigating the effects of social groups on wellbeing in students and how personality traits and esteem may also influence happiness, taught me how to work cooperatively and efficiently within a group, think creatively to examine factors and how they interact as well as how to interpret and present scientific findings. My dissertation also pushed me further towards pursuing a career in counselling as I was able to research in depth how certain factors influence our happiness which directly relates to my personal interest in mental health. I was also able to explore this in my third year subjects which centred on emotion, mental health, antisocial and criminal behaviour as well as the evolution of society. Not only was university a place for my mind to grow but it helped me learn more about myself and others and I feel as though it enabled me to become a more emotionally mature individual. Show less

MSc, Counselling and Psychotherapy Counselling Distinction

During my time at Keele I completed a Masters level dissertation titled "The New Wave of Sexual Violence: Women’s Experience of Revenge Porn. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis". An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis". My dissertation involved collecting qualitative data from interviews with women who had been victims of revenge porn (where another individual posts/shares/distributes intimate images without their consent with the purpose of humiliating or causing upset and distress). The entire experience was highly educational and thought provoking, further I found a passion for this cause and have since become very interested in keeping up to date with news regarding this topic. Engaging with survivors of this online sexual abuse also strengthened my counselling skills as it allowed me to gain some perspective around how this crime impacts those involved and as a consequence I feel better equipped to support and work with survivors. Dec 2017 - Jul 2018
      Volunteer Counsellor

I worked as a volunteer counsellor at the charity Savana which specialises in supporting and advising those who are affected by sexual and domestic violence. At Savana, I completed 33 hours of supervised counselling with an array of different women who had all survived domestic and sexual abuse. Using a person-centred therapeutic technique I worked to support my clients with whatever problem they presented with which included; suicidal thoughts, depression, anger, anxiety and paranoia, self-esteem and self-blame, unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcoholism and substance abuse as well as family, money and health problems. I also took part in administrative duties such as organising IOA's (Initial Options Appointments) for clients and standard office jobs. Show less
