  Participated in an ongoing research project in the High Sierras examining the biogeography of the Sierra Nevada. Conducted extensive sampling of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers; scientifically documented wind patterns, temperature cycles, radiation levels, and cloud types. Made ecological observations, and mastered basic research skills for alpine and subalpine ecosystems, wilderness management, and the principles of wilderness ethics, current conservation issues, such as fire management, water use, bear management and the proposed establishment of new wilderness areas. Enabled me to better understand and document the relationships between the physical landscape, the atmosphere, and species diversity; worked with and drew conclusions from the quantitative and qualitative information gathered.   Performed Old Growth surveys, stand exams, and field verified attributes in forest settings. Inventory, identification, classification and mapping of vegetation. Conducted insect and disease surveys (primarily spruce beetle). Inventoried lynx and snowshoe hare habitat. Data collected is used to update the Public Lands corporate R2VEG geodatabase, and the Forest Service’s FSVEG database. These databases are used for project and forest level planning and analysis, and included research in and around proposed natural gas well pads, roads and pipelines.
