While the mission of the agency is to provide full police services to the University of Maryland - College Park campus, UMPD also provided police services for a large geographical area of the City of College Park in support of the Prince George's County Police Department.   Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and General Counsel, the Chief of Police is responsible for the comprehensive operations of the University's Public Safety Department. Serves as the primary resource to the University on all matters related to campus safety and security. Develops, administers, evaluates, and refines all safety and security functions, programs, and policies in support of the University's mission and vision; ensures compliance with all laws and local ordinances; and maintains awareness of best practices and national trends related to campus safety/security and legal issues impacting higher education. Working with the Vice President, will lead the University in crisis management situations; develops, maintains, reviews and tests the University's emergency response plans including critical incident policy/protocol development, emergency response team and public safety staff training, and the coordination of community notification processes. Works with Student Affairs, Residence Life, and other University departments to proactively address safety and security concerns, implements action plans, and ensures related policies are consistently enforced; conducts periodic fire, safety, and security inspections on all University facilities; and oversees the modification and/or development of all campus security access, communication, and surveillance systems and applications. Provides administrative and operational guidance for a 24-hour/365 days a year department of staff, currently consisting of 30 public safety professionals (19 sworn), creates and evaluates training models, and ensures all officers are properly trained and meet all certification standards as well as exhibit excellent customer service skills; cultivates and sustains positive working relationships with the Wilkes-Barre and Edwardsville Police and Fire Departments and other community organizations.
