I teach a variety of courses; from the more intimate (25 students) to the large-scale cohorts (800-1200). While technically part of my title, 'Intercultural Learning' is contested terminology, and for me, questionable terrain. I am fascinated with the obsessions around 'culture' in the USA specifically. Culture is a term that is used with less enthusiasm in other contexts- and when used, with more deliberate and intentional objectives. In my courses, we try to problematize its use, its meaning, and ultimately, this process reflects whether we use it at all!I teach LAS 291/292 Global Perspectives- a three-part course that happens in three phases; pre-departure, in-country, and re-entry. This course accompanies an all-year or semester educational abroad program. I also teach a course focused on civic engagement and social outreach during the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, which is called Covid Corps LAS 199: Actions for Solutions. I teach a course called LAS 199 Pre Professional Seminar; the idea here is that we are questioning the non-traditional professional development trajectory, non-traditional milestones, and trying to unpack notions of success, failure, privilege, justice, and the digital divide (amongst other themes). It is a course that encourages students to re-think their power, positionality, and their privilege in a number of ways.I am currently involved in developing international virtual experiences for our students and I also take part in the Global Classrooms initiative, which is our institutional response to a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) paradigm and learning model.
