Chief of Staff District Ebola Response Centre

I deployed on Op GRITROCK, the British Army's response to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Sierra Leone. In my original role as watch keeper, I was responsible for supporting the coordination of the Ebola Training Academy in Freetown, enabling the training of key local national workers.Following the completion of this role, I was moved to the Tonkolili District Ebola Response Centre (DERC) as the Operations Officer and then Chief of Staff (COS). In my role as COS I was working two ranks up for a sustained two month period, coordinating and commanding the operational response to EVD at the district level. This involved working with civilian contractors, NGOs, Government Agencies and local national civilians. I was also the Officer in Command of a group of Royal Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) Junior Officers, each with their own sphere of responsibility in the operation. Under my command, the district saw positive EVD cases drop dramatically from over 100 to just 1 case per week. The experience provided a unique insight into working in a multi agency environment with a host of unique problems which needed solving every day, alongside commanding an effective and highly successful humanitarian operation.
