University of Nottingham Students' Union
Jun 2015 - Jul 2019As one of my pledges as Education Officer, in September 2018 I launched a campaign focusing on additional and hidden course costs. This experience includes:• Analysing the current situation and developing a detailed campaign cycle plan• Developing brand recognition for the campaign including both digital and physical assets • Recruiting volunteers to support with the physical campaign week we hosted • Created a cost-efficient physical campaign space in the form of a “hidden course costs shop” • Used social media and digital assets to reach students who would have struggled to engage in the physical campaign week • Analysing data provided from our Union surveys, data collected online and in-person focus groups from the week • Wrote a paper with recommendations to the University on how they can tackle Hidden Course Costs Show less During my time as a trustee, I was a member of UoNSU’s People Committee. Since July 2018, I have held the position of chair. This role includes leading on the development of the agenda for a Trustee sub-Committee, chairing the meeting effectively and efficiently and leading on development of HR & Learning and Development practice internally. As part of this role, I have led on the recruitment of a variety of positions including student trustees, a representation coordinator and most recently the appointment of a new Chief Executive. In the recruitment of the new CEO, I was involved in all aspects of the recruitment process including tendering for our recruitment partner, drafting our people specification and recruitment promotion, shortlisting, interviewing and appointing. Show less Elected in 2017, and re-elected in 2018 I represent the 34,000+ students at the University of Nottingham. I work in a team of 5 other Officers to deliver an excellent student experience at UoN, with a focus on teaching, learning and education. My responsibilities and achievements include: • Representing students at all levels of governance at the University. Highlights include being a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee where I have added to discussion around learning technology, teaching space, assessment and feedback and academic representation. As a full member of University Council, the highest governing body of the institution I have worked alongside external industry professionals to deliver strategic oversight, monitor risk and make decisions on financial development. • Strategic Development - I took a lead in the development of UoNSU’s second 5 year strategy with a specific focus on one of four strands - student voice and democracy. Leading on workshops, drafting and conversations with our consultants. I am currently the Union lead for the University’s next strategy too. • Engage in both Quality Assurance through internal processes such as annual monitoring and Quality Enhancement as a member of triennial departmental reviews. • Building relationships with a variety of key stakeholders including students, student groups, University leaders, local trade unions, the National Union of Students and those in local government. • Organise and manage campaigns to lobby for change for the Union membership, recently securing £1200 to send Irish students home to vote in the 2018 Repeal the 8th Referendum. Show less Alongside the Postgraduate Officer, it is my role to co-lead the Education Network, a network of nearly 900 student volunteers and academic representatives. My work in this area has included:• Restructuring the meeting structure of the education network to foster a more effective bottom-up and grassroots approach to feedback and campaigns within the network. Giving reps a space where they can meet to discuss ideas and take ownership/responsibility of their own feedback.• Introducing a tiered recognition and training scheme for all academic representatives. The new scheme is in it’s first year and includes activity to develop academic representatives as reps, students and people. Supporting them to recognise their experiences, how they will help post-graduation and celebrating the hard work they put in as volunteers. • Regularly attending meetings with representatives to hear their views and have that as a key driver for the representations I make to the University in committee meetings.
