  I was the co-founder and Director of Public Relations and Outreach for Cancer Communications, Inc., a niche medical communications company, working exclusively in the field of oncology. I managed the marketing, public relations, and community outreach for ten books and three film documentaries on cancer. I helped establish and promote a series of customized reports on cancer treatment and the monthly newsletter, ADVANCES. I established and collaborated with a wide network of media, and collaborated with the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine, the Cancer Prevention Coalition, Breast Cancer Action, Life Extension Foundation, and the RAND Corporation, among others. In addition, I edited and proofread articles for The Lancet, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the American Medical Association, New Scientist, Immunobiology, Pharmacological Research, Anticancer Research, Genetic Engineering News, and others. I was an active member of the Independent Book Publishers Association and received their Benjamin Franklin Award for several of our books. I also attended the American Booksellers Association annually and sold book rights at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany. Show less

  As Associate Editor of Research Penn State magazine, I conceived, researched, wrote, and produced cover stories, full-length feature stories and shorter pieces for the print magazine, as well as related multimedia pieces. In addition, I edited the work of other staff members and freelancers, hired and supervised student interns and freelance writers, and provided quality control at galley stages.

  As Manager of Research Communications, I directed the Public Engagement initiatives for Strategic Communication. I maintained a broad and evaluative review of the Penn State research projects and people in order to plan and implement two educational outreach series that are vehicles for select Penn State faculty members to share their research with several important constituencies of the University. I worked closely with community, media, and research organizations, both regionally and nationally, in order to create 18-20 public engagement events per year for Strategic Communications. Show less As Assistant Director of Research Publications, I wrote regularly about research in articles for print and on the University’s newswires. I supported all facets of the publication process for the Unit’s print magazine, Research/Penn State, and helped to write and produce the Annual Report of Research Activity for the Office of the Vice President for Research. As the manager of our office’s educational outreach activities, I expanded the programming goals and audience for our community speaker series, Research Unplugged, and served as the coordinator and moderator for its twelve annual events. I also cultivated collaborative relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders such as Schlow Centre Region Library, the Alumni Association, WPSU, Palmer Museum of Art, and more.
