Participated in a research project as a part of the ICARUS program at the University of Queensland. The project was to design, optimise and manufacture a Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rail bridge, comprised of 'honeycomb' shaped cells filled with soil.My roles in the project included:- Providing the group with a parametric model of the bridge, using software packages Grasshopper and Rhinoceros;- Developing useful and efficient manufacturing methods for both small scale models and the full scale prototype;- Bridge manufacturing;- Assist in modelling the bridge in the finite element software, Abaqus;- Modelling testing rig;- General liaising with our project supervisor, lab technicians and group members to organise meeting times, equipment use and testing proposals. Show less Worked as a member of a construction team for a GFRP, concrete and steel composite rail bridge, known as the 'Double Skin Tubular Truss (DSTT) bridge'. The bridge won the World Innovation in Bridge Engineering (WIBE) award. My main roles in the construction process included:• Aligning the steel arch pieces with one another to then be welded;• Attaching strain gauges to the steel arch for data collection and analysis;• Cutting holes in the pre-made GFRP tubes;• Placing the GFRP tubes around the steel arch pieces, and aligning them accordingly;• Sealing the GFRP tubes with a fast-curing resin, and further strengthening the connection using prepreg GFRP strips;• Placing the full GFRP system in the correct position to then allow the concrete to be poured.
