    • International School Utrecht

      Jul 2017 - now

As the language coordinator, I work with the admissions team to determine English levels of new students and place them in the correct English group. I regularly track and record the students' English language progress and help the students to set language goals for themselves. I work alongside my colleagues to create a relevant curriculum for the department, based on students' language levels. I guide and support other staff with professional development in teaching English language acquisition students. More recently, I am involved with helping to implement a greater awareness and use of home languages as the school aims to become a 'Language Friendly School'. I am also involved with helping to coordinate government funding to be used for improving language and literacy skills in the school. Show less At the International School Utrecht, English Language Acquisition is an assessed subject. Teaching this involves understanding students' language needs and levels and preparing appropriate teaching resources so that students can grow their English vocabulary and grammar. I assess and report on students' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills throughout the term and I meet regularly with students to give them feedback and set language goals. I use the WIDA framework to help students with goal setting. I regularly meet with other colleagues in the EAL department to plan and share resources. I teach a variety of phases, from phase 1 (absolute beginner) to phase 4 (upper intermediate). Show less At the International School Utrecht, English Language Acquisition is a subject offered to students who are still new to English. As an EAL teacher in the Primary Years Programme (PYP), I teach young students English and work alongside classroom teachers to modify and scaffold tasks according to the English level of the student. This could be in the form of inclusion of the student’s mother-tongue, working with a buddy, more pictures and/or simpler task instructions. I provide support sessions to beginner students in the form of pull-out/parallel lessons and then, as the students’ English abilities develop, this support generally changes into in-class support where I team teach with the classroom teacher. In developing materials, I work with the EAL team and alongside other classroom teachers. The students’ ages range from 8 – 11 years old. I am responsible for writing bi-annual reports for the students and meeting with parents and teachers for feedback. Show less
