    • Nationwide Building Society

      Nov 2014 - Oct 2016

In this role, I managed a team of copywriters on a business-wide corporate rebranding project. My team transformed thousands of B2C communications by refreshing tone of voice, applying new style guides and promoting customer service principles. As well as overseeing the quality of the team's output, I was responsible for maintaining senior stakeholder relationships and problem-solving when fundamental processes ran into problems. As such, I designed and implemented new ways of working which greatly increased the team's efficiency and the project’s expectations of its key stakeholders. It was essential to engage and enable my team to deliver projects to deadlines. I achieved this by promoting a deeper understanding of brand voice in the world of business advertising and trusting individuals to manage their own workloads. I built a highly-skilled team with an unbeatable drive. Ultimately, I believe the work of the team greatly reduced the risk posed to customers; we frequently corrected inaccurate and/or misleading information. This was my first experience of managing people. As a leader, I got the most from my team by understanding its mix of personalities, its strengths and its weaknesses. I facilitated regular 121 development conversations and made sure the team dynamic remained positive by managing difficult situations sensitively. I'm confident that strong working relationships were formed across the team during my time as the assistant manager and, moreover, I believe the trust placed in one another's abilities formed the bedrock of what was a fun and productive working environment.Thank you to Nationwide for the great opportunity and experience. Show less A day, week and month at the world's biggest Building Society ... I begin most days by managing my emails and making a daily plan, but sometimes I like to go straight into my copywriting activities; I begin the day as productively as possible. It's my responsibility to refresh tone of voice across customer communications (letters, emails, sms and bbm). I love the challenge of understanding the customers' needs and promoting key user experience principles. I plan and manage my workload effectively so that I have time each day to support the wider team and think about my personal development.Weekly, I engage with key stakeholders, report to my managers and make sure that I measure progress against the plan. It's obviously important to deliver the targets I agree with my business area. To that end, I drive expectations and ensure that my approach to work is confident and assertive. When I meet challenges, I tend to gather as much information as I can before seeking the expertise of others in my scheduled weekly engagements. Month on month, I seek new opportunities in my role. As part of a brand new team in the business, I help to drive new standards and establish processes across comms delivery. Typically, I also go beyond my responsibilities to offer something different to the team. That may involve seeking new customer insight, engaging with digital channels or going more broadly across the society to build and share more knowledge. My particularly strong networking and interpersonal skills enable me to influence others and raise my profile appropriately.Overall I ensure that I'm continuously self motivated, delivering better customer experience and stepping beyond my comfort zone within this challenging industry. Freelance Writer, Editor and Proofreader

Words make sense of our complex world. All businesses and publishers use them to shine light on something new and exciting. I’m a writer, editor and proofreader for print and online; I specialise in taking your idea and making it clear, consistent and compelling. As a writer, I offer research-led, audience-focused content creation. Whether it’s for an advert, blog, magazine, journal or book, I use my sharp news-sense and academic skills to create an authoritative voice on a range of subjects. As an editor, I love picking up and taking care of your words. If you’re writing, then you’re probably trying to share an important message. It could be to influence, inform or entertain, so you want to get the best out of every syllable. I make sure your words are fit for their intended purpose. You brief me on your expected style, tone of voice and audience, and I'll get to work.Need a proofreader? Right now, I know you just want to hand over your work to be published. But remember, your brain is exceptionally good at seeing what it wants to see and making sense of the nonsensical; your eyes can become blind to those pesky unintentional mistakes. My proofreading makes sure your words are at their best. Show less

2nd Place in the Long Form Category of the National Television News Competiton Broadcast Journalism Training Council Sep 2009 I was awarded 2nd place in this national film competition for a ten minute news package about the socio-economic impact of the Humber Bridge.Focusing on the cost to local people and businesses, who have little choice but to use the bridge, the film offers balanced insight into the debts being repaid decades after the bridge's construction. By interviewing local campaigners, politicians, business owners and national thinktanks, I delivered a compelling narrative for a broad audience.
