  Rural Camp Experience with Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS)

  Experience:Participated in a 10-day rural camp organized by Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS) in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh in January 2023.Learned about SPS's approach to alternative development models and gained insights into the organization's work in areas such as watershed development, sustainable agriculture, commodity aggregation, livestock, health and nutrition, public education, research, and community media.Engaged in various activities during the camp, including shramdaan, field visits, meetings with women's self-help groups (SHGs), and discussions with facilitators.Worked with rural and local communities to gather information using participatory rural appraisal (PRA) techniques, create resource maps, conduct seasonality and wealth analysis, and participate in seasonal mapping.Observed various cultural rituals during the camp and gained a deeper appreciation for the rich diversity of rural India.Learning:Developed a better understanding of the challenges faced by rural communities and the innovative solutions that SPS and its partners have developed to address them.Learned about the importance of community participation and ownership in the development process and the need for a flexible and creative approach to overcome bureaucratic limitations.Gained insights into the power of dialogue and consensus-building in creating a dynamic and interactive organization.Improved communication and collaboration skills by working with a diverse group of professionals from different backgrounds and levels of experience.Overall, the rural camp experience with SPS was an enriching and transformative experience that deepened my commitment to social justice and sustainable development.
