  As a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints one of our main objectives was to go proselyting to the people in the area which we were assigned to, in my case the Rochester, New York Area. Along with proselyting we would we would go about serving throughout the community, lead scripture studies, perform daily planning session to maximize our productivity, and set daily, weekly, and monthly goals.

  Deckhand/Naturalist/Passenger Service

  With this job came many responsibilities. At the beginning of the day and before a the first trip I would check the vessel, making sure there was enough supplies such as drinks and food on board before the passengers arrived. As passengers would arrive to the dock I would lead them down to the vessel, making sure that they boarded safely before leaving to go whale watching. Part of my job, since I was a deckhand I would make sure to untie/tie the vessel securely to the dock. While out on the water my job was to provide a narration of the surrounding area/wildlife, provide the passengers with food/drink, and overall make sure the guest were safe while out on the water.   Deckhand/Engineer

  My responsibilities as a Deckhand/Engineer included: routine maintenance on the boats, engines and and the vessels jet used to propel through the water. This routine maintenance would encompass cleaning the bilges, changing of coolant/oil, and making sure the vessels interior is presentable when passengers board. Part of my outside deckhand duties required me to safely moor the vessel, set up the ramp so passengers can safely board/disembark. When I wasn't taking care of the vessel I would be assisting the Passenger Service crew members by handling cash from sales, cleaning, and most importantly the guest were safe and having the experience they were seeking for.   Deck Cadet

  As a deck my main objection was to learn and gain experience of the vessel operations and procedures. The biggest way I was able to do that was standing an four hour watch with the mate on duty. By doing so I navigated the vessel through the use of charts and radar, directed the helmsman, and made radio calls in order to navigate safely with other vessels nearby. I participated in daily GMDSS routine checks, along with weekly chart corrections. While in port I would assist the other AB's out on the car deck, helping lash and tie down the various vehicles that came aboard along with directing people in order for them to reach the main deck.
