I trained as an apprenticeship at Benson Bros in Gisborne, and my role encompassed field service in remote locations and repair of heavy industrial equipment, i.e. fishing trawlers, portable logging equipment, harvesting equipment etc.

I Had various roles from operating harvester equipment to electrical tradesman's work. When travelling I worked in a variety of areas that gave me hands-on experience. This included operating roadside mowers, hop harvesting and driving heavy traffic vehicles.

Compac Sorting Equipment

This included weight, colour, blemish, diameter and shape. My role was to manage: the electronic operation department in the business. In this role, I managed eight direct reports, three technicians workshop based and five field technicians. I was responsible for: procurement all electronics this included computers optical cameras the build of all equipment – at the time the R&D was included in the design-build the commissioning of new equipment the pre-season maintenance and the on-call support for the kiwi and apple season in NZ, this expanded to Australia and the USA. -The role had high seasonal demands. To manage customer expectation and soften the demand on reduces at peak time, I introduced pre-season service contracts and implemented procurement controls for the manufacture of the electronic equipment. I was able to keep track of costs and ensure the projects, and the installation was delivered on time and budget. Show less

The projects included Wind farms transmission thoroughfares and substations. However, the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake destroyed the Truescape's city office, and the business turned its focus to the core business in the USA, and the business development to Australia ceased. I managed five direct reports, two in sales and three estimators. The company was troubled financially. Consequently, I reviewed best return of time and the target was key customers. I renegotiated contracts and focused on core business with a higher margin. The business tracking in and out of the red, this was not enough and cuts were made to overheads. However, the demand to manage 44 distributors required a new strategy. From the market visits I presented to the board to develop and agree strategies: I was able to establish an identifiable brand position. I engaged the services of 'Better by Design' and NZTE for market research and combined this with a global customer database to segment and measure growth by product/market/customer type I developed a strategy for in market BDM’s for Europe, America and Asia. I developed a team (including expert consultants) to develop online content and strategy to communicate technical information globally. Outputs included:o Crossing language barriers for complex information by using video or digital renders and overlaying infographicso Working with a PHD student to develop a calculator then developing delivery with gaming software to convey installation and standardisation support. Over the two years as GM: the business yield a 15% growth year on year I was active in developing the sales and tracking results I introduced NCR risk register and DIFOT to manage deliveries I replaced MYOB with XERO and introduced CIN7 to track stock I develop a business plan and highlevel plans for board reporting, this included: o Monthy report and update on progress toward deliverableso A risk register along with prioritieso Financial report o HR report I am an operational GM, and I was actively presenting to consultants. I spent time in the field, managing subcontractor and their assembly. I fronted contractors to resolve issues. I worked directly in operation and procurement. With first-hand operational knowledge, I was able to streamline business with the help of the management team.
