The ultimate aim was to explore the potential expansion of the Mintek’s Minfurn technology into the water treatment and chemical industries, whereby virgin and spent carbon can be processed in the Minfurn.*Carried out a preliminary testwork on the production of pigment grade titanium dioxide from titanium carbide prepared from ilmenite and titania slag. The process aimed at eliminating certain drawbacks of the chloride (Kroll) process, and may avoid the smelting of ilmenite.*Helped in developing a cyclone-based process for the melting and/or reduction/partial reduction of particulate ores and concentrates as a means of minimizing metallurgical wastes, as well as optimizing of the overall energy consumption.
