Developing Online Mathematic Tools - UCLeXtend

This summer project at UCL gave me the opportunity to develop online mathematic tools for UCLeXtend, now used as revision for the Maths syllabus across the 1st and 2nd year UCL Engineering degrees. This included:• Testing - development of maths questions, checking solutions / format of mathematical quizzes worked to A-level and degree standard (1st and 2nd year)• Software development - using Moodle as a base to set up a website to host the quizzes• Producing documentation - word, powerpoint and online tutorials to use on the website• Media - creation of maths tutorial videos using LectureCast that were used on the website• Organisation - to test the website before release I organised a workshop of current UCL students and implemented their feedback Show less

      Internship

Part-time internship during my University studies, assisting with research and the development of online engineering teaching resources for students and graduates, including: • Expedition Workshed, (www.expeditionworkshed.org) • Engineering Mastermind, (www.engineeringmastermind.org) • The Bare Essentials of Soil Mechanics Series (http://expeditionworkshed.org/workshed/introduction-to-soil-mechanics/)

      Aug 2014 - Sept 2014
Summer Intern - Buildings and Design

My time in the Buildings Structures team was split approximately 50/50 on:A disaster relief project - communicating with a Design Engineer in Tacloban after Super Typhoon Haiyan struck in the Philippines. • Seismic design, using both the Eurocodes and the Philippine building codes to design specific members, such as beams, slabs and columns. • Finite Element Modelling (FEM Package S-frame) in order to aid in the design of a Transitional shelter that would be resilient enough to withstand Earthquake and Typhoon loading. On-going Ramboll projects including the Thames Tideway 'Riverlight' development and 77 South Audley Street.• Gained invaluable experience in quality control, checking formwork and steel re-bar placement on-site against engineering drawings.• Communicating with engineers and workers on-site to ensure the required standards are being met. Key projects:• MARP Croydon Flyover - Project engineer for the refurbishment scheme currently in concept design • Cycle Future Route 10 - structural engineer - Developed the Feasibility and Concept design (AIP to CG300) of a new Pedestrian/cycle footbridge• Silvertown Tunnel - Lower Lea Crossing structures maintenance and remedial measures Whole Life Cost analysis. TAA site representative for Boord Street Footbridge fabrication and installation for handover to TfL• Sustainability champion - carbon modelling, providing sustainability updates to the team, including latest standards and updates to internal guidance documentation and best practice i.e when conducting structural reviews• 3rd party projects Infrastructure protection - Technical Approvals Authority (TAA) Project Engineer on a number of schemes to protect our existing tunnels and bridge assets close to new infrastructure developments.-Leading on the management of the CS451 Structural Review Programme Show less Fifth placement on the TfL Civil Engineering Graduate scheme acting as an Assistant Project Engineer on Finsbury Park Step-Free Access and Western Station Entrance upgrade. Key responsibilities included:• Daily monitoring of tunnel, platform and track movements• Preparation of Fit-out tender Works Information• Management of Pathway documents (common project management methodology used by TfL) through Stage Gate 4• Working with Civil, Drainage and Tunnelling discipline engineers to carry out inspections (NOWRI's) and close out any defects in assets, non conformance reports and contractor compliance with the works information. • Assisting with commercial aspects of the NEC3 Option A contract, including implementing Early Warning Notifications (EWNs), Project Managers Communications (PMC's) and New Compensation Events (NCE's) through Asite as part of the NEC3 Option A contract and a number of compensation events on behalf of the client. Show less Based on-site at Hammersmith Bridge to help monitor progress and observe the interim restrengthening remedial works. The work involved replacing 100+ deck panels on the bridge to meet the current live load demands in the preparation for the future restrengthening works. During this period of time, I also acted as an Assistant River Piers Engineer, working on a portfolio of works that involves the ongoing maintenance of the London River Services Piers as part of the Mayors River Action Plan. I was based on site for the Pier upgrades programme, inspecting the new pontoon to be brought at Bankside, and inspecting the existing piers at Westminster and Embankment. Show less Second 6 month placement on the TfL Graduate Scheme working as an Assistant Project Engineer.Working on Future Station Projects (FSP) including South Kensington station concept design. This is a Station Capacity Upgrade and Step Free Access Project that involves working with many interdisciplinary teams of architects, senior engineers and designers. The project is being delivered in phases to be delivered alongside Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP), Lifts and Escalators (L&E), Commercial Development and the Victoria Line Signalling (VLS) upgrade. My roles include:• Looking at accessibility of the station, and providing alternative solutions to those proposed by designers• Change control requests for altering existing services and platforms and responding to technical queries • Engineering Handbook development to provide guidance on standards for Future Stations• Geotechnical risk analysis for Camden Town, Oxford Circus, Walthamstow Central stations.• Producing Verification Activity and Interface Management Plans Show less First 6 month placement in Tunnels and Structures - AMD (Asset Management Directorate) on the Civil Engineering Graduate Scheme. My role as an Assistant Client Sponsor in T&S involved working on Capital Renewals schemes, under the LoHAC maintenance programme.
