      Data Collector

The Dutch HIV monitoring foundation aims to collect, report, and analyse data from HIV-infected patients in the Netherlands. This makes an important and necessary contribution to healthcare for HIV-infected people living in the Netherlands. As a data collector I was responsible for extracting patient's medical data from their files and entering the data into the database at the HIV treatment centre of the University Medical Centre Utrecht. This included information such as date of birth, date of last negative and first positive HIV test, route of infection, and smoking, alcohol and drug use. Information about further treatment/follow-up data were collected at each follow-up visit (e.g. information about the treatment, disease symptoms, and laboratory results). Show less

      Research Intern

In this MSc internship I examined the quasispecies dynamics in chronic HCV infection at the Department of Immunology (Utrecht University, Wilhelmina Children's Hospital).Supervisor: Dr. D. van Baarle

    • Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam / VU

      Feb 2010 - Jul 2015

My PhD project was an international collaboration that aimed at elucidating the mechanism behind a signal transduction pathway called Cell-Surface Signalling (CSS) in the Gram-negative bacterial species Pseudomonas. CSS systems are essential in the regulation of iron uptake machineries, but have also been shown to be directly involved in the production of virulence factors. The research performed at both the Department of Molecular Microbiology (VU University Amsterdam) and the Department of Environmental Protection (EEZ – CSIC, Granada, Spain) resulted in several peer-reviewed publications, of which the first has won a national award for best publication in the field of Microbiology. The resulting thesis was granted a national award for best thesis in category 'General Microbiology'. Several travel grants enabled me to present my work at both national and international meetings. In addition, I have supervised several students during their BSc and MSc research internships and was a teacher for BSc courses at the VU University.Promoter: Prof. Dr. W. Bitter Co-promoter: Dr. M. Stichting Project Open Air NL is a non-profit foundation created in response to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in the Netherlands, with the mission to contribute to the battle against (the consequences of) COVID-19. The foundation focuses on alleviating the pressure on healthcare by helping solve shortages in material and equipment. We do this by e.g. facilitating the additional production of critical (respiratory) equipment and components in the treatment of COVID-19 patients where the regular suppliers cannot meet the demand in time. In addition, the foundation is open to other solutions that can contribute to the prevention, treatment and aftercare of COVID-19, including emergency ventilation, home monitoring and alternatives for personal protective equipment. We have established a network of Dutch engineers and manufacturing companies that offer their knowledge and manufacturing capacity to the medical sector. In addition, we provide financial support to promising initiatives that allows the development and implementation of concrete solutions that meet demand from healthcare workers. Show less
