There was a lot of first class competition for the prize this year. The prize this year goes to Alexander John Armstrong for his thought-provoking essay on “Will advocates and judges be replaced by computer-based services in the future?” which persuasively argued that human judges and advocates have a future – that’s a relief. We must all make proper use of modern technology but it would appear that human beings, giving advice as advocates and making decisions as judges, will be around for some time. The essay shows that the author has indeed studied the relevant subject in detail and that the objective of the prize has been satisfied.Congratulations Mr Armstrong.” Show less

This was a tort moot on the area of psychiatric harm for secondary victims. I received the following feedback from the bench. 'Your overview was exceptionally clear and you were completely undaunted by the fact that you were even asked a question during your opening sketch. Your third argument seemed very sophisticated. Quite often you had picked up on points made by the judges to your opponent. I had always read Jaensch as an immediate aftermath case and hadn't put it into the relationship argument, but I saw your point in the end. You could have picked up on Gordon's question about "building on causation" to infer closeness of tie of love and affection - that would have been quite a powerful strategy. That said, your treatment of the "one way" nature of the closeness really impressed the judges. They also commented to the effect that you were already close to being "the finished article". Your referencing to Alcock was exemplary by the way (and doing it once was enough, just to show that you knew how). On the whole, a very strong performance. Show less
