      Teacher, Tutor, Cultural Ambassador

Initially I was a tutor to 2 young Korean girls whose father was a visiting scholar at the University. This was my introduction to both teaching and the wonderful world of Korean cuisine. Eventually the scope of this broadened to teaching the wives of these visiting scholars. The husbands ultimately caught on, which led to their private tutoring, with a focus on conversation, accent modification and academic writing. My role as a cultural ambassador covered many bases, including: teaching classes about target language culture, planning and attending outings in the community (from kickboxing to baseball games to touring the local brewery), and helping Chinese businessmen navigate labyrinthine American supermarkets. • EF English First

      Oct 2008 - Dec 2012
Director of Studies, Senior Teacher, Life Club Coordinator

My time here ran the gamut of titles and their associated responsibilities. As the Life Club Coordinator I communicated and collaborated with members of the marketing team to plan life clubs for the range of our students in the following month. This involved language clubs both in-house and off-site. As the Senior Teacher, the performance of the entire teaching team was my primary focus. This was a very hands-on endeavor, consisting primarily of lesson planning, focused lesson observations and feedback with teachers. As the Director of Studies I was the academic manager involved in the overall running of the school. This involved logistics, hands-on academic and product training, product implementation, work with the curriculum and the myriad 'unknowns' that tend to arise in a given day/week in an English training center in China. Ultimately it was a position that required constant collaboration and communication with all of the different departments in the school. Show less

      Examiner

I gesticulated wildly and smiled far too much while coercing nervous, mostly college-aged students into talking to me. Also, I read a lot of written tests. As a double/second marker, I re-assessed speaking and writing portions of the test when scores had a jagged profile.Occasionally, I ventured out to rural areas of China with a group of volunteers to teach middle school kids.
